Kang Yi Meets with Acting Director of the United Nations Statistics Division

On the morning of September 7, Kang Yi, Commissioner of the National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS of China), met with Shantanu Mukherjee, Acting Director of the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), and his delegation. The two sides exchanged views on matters including the China-UN Statistical Capacity Development Trust Fund Project and the future development of the United Nations Global Hub on Big Data and Data Science for Official Statistics.

Commissioner Kang expressed his appreciation for the UNSD for its long-standing support for the development of China’s statistical work. He noted that, in recent years, the two sides have worked together to advance the implementation of a number of important cooperation projects and have achieved fruitful outcomes, particularly in the China-UN Trust Fund Project on Statistical Capacity Development and the development of the United Nations Global Hub on Big Data and Data Science for Official Statistics. These projects have not only provided impetus for global statistical capacity building, but also served as a bridge for China’s deeper engagement in international statistical affairs. Commissioner Kang stated that the NBS of China is willing to further expand areas of cooperation with the UNSD and jointly advance the development of global statistics.

Acting Director Mukherjee spoke highly of the positive role played by the NBS of China in advancing global statistical development and expressed appreciation for China’s contributions to enhancing statistical capacity among developing countries. He introduced the latest developments in the field of international statistics and looked forward to carrying out more practical cooperation with the NBS of China in areas such as “Beyond GDP” statistics and AI applications in statistics.

Officials from the Administrative Office (Department of International Cooperation, Policy Research Office) and the Statistical Education and Training Center of the NBS of China attended the meeting.
