Under-Secretary-General of UN Visited NBS

Mr. Ma Jiantang, Commissioner of NBS, interviewed Messrs. Sha Zukang, Under-Secretary-General, Economic and Social Affairs of UN, Paul Cheung, Director, United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), and other officials of UN, in NBS on March 23. Both sides exchanged opinions on the acceleration in the intercourse and cooperation in the field of statistics between China and UN, and other concerned problems deeply. Ms. Zhang Guorong, Group Leader, Discipline Inspection Group of the Party Group, and Mr. Xie Hongguang, Deputy Commissioner of NBS, participated the meeting.

Mr. Ma Jiantang was highly evaluated the long-term friendly cooperative relations and fruits achieved in the statistics areas between both sides, and was grateful for the attention and supports from Messrs. Sha Zukang and Paul Cheung for China’s statistical works.

Mr. Ma Jiantang pointed out that, the reform and development of China’s statistics is at an important stage. The development of China’s social economy required to speed up the reform and development of China’s statistics for solving the ceaseless new situations and problems. The demands in statistics are increasing in China, which need the Economic and Social Affairs, especially the continuing supports from UNSD, which not only for accelerating the development of China’s statistics, but also for the contribution on the development of global statistics.

For the Statistics Trust Fund Project established by Chinese government and United Nations, both sides considered that the Project was the contributive symbol for the development of global statistics, especially in the developing countries, which will be beneficial to improving China's statistical capacities, promoting China’s statistical diplomatic skills, and extending the influences of China’s statistics in the international statistical affairs.

Mr. Sha Zukang said, China is the world's biggest developing country, the international prestige is constantly rising, China’s statistics works became more and more important no matter for the development of China's domestic policy-making, or for economic globalization. China’s statistics has become an important part in the world; global statistics should not form complete if there is no China’s statistics. Mr. Sha expressed that, the United Nations will, as always, attach supports and importance to the reform and development of China's statistics, and strengthen the cooperation with China in the field of statistics.

The responsible staff from Administrative Office, Department of International Cooperation, Department of Statistical Design and Management, Department of Personnel, Department of Finance, and Statistical Education Center of NBS, attended the meeting.
