Mr. Zhang Weimin Attended the Thirty-Seventh Session of United Nations Statistical Commission

The Thirty-Seventh Session of United Nations Statistical Commission was convened at headquarters of United Nations in New York on March 7 – 10, 2006. Mr. Zhang Weimin, Deputy Commissioner of National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) as the leader of China Statistical Delegation (including Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR Census and Statistics Department on behalf of Statistics and Census Service) presented the conference. Mr. Zhang Weimin was elected as Vice-Chairman of the United Nations Statistical Commission at the conference.

  

During the conferences, Mr. Zhang Weimin attended joint conference with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, had an audience with Mr. José Antonio Ocampo, Under-Secretary-General of United Nations for Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). Mr. Zhang Weimin and other representatives of the delegation took full advantage of conference intermissions to expanded series bilateral intercommunion, carried through interlocutions on related proceedings with the principals of national statistics institution of Canada, Germany, Finland, Korea, Cuba, New Zealand and etc, as well as United Nations Statistics Division(UNSD), World Bank(WB), International Monetary Fund(IMF), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations(FAO), and ESCAP Statistics Division.

During the conference, China Delegation emitted opinions on industrial statistics, ICP, energy statistics, social statistics, development indicators and etc. topics for discussion, and as a co-sponsor support to the UN Economic and Social Council to discuss the draft resolution of "Strengthening Statistical Capacity".

Mr. Zhang Weimin made a situation report to all the diplomats of China's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, responded by invitation from Mr. Wang Guangya, Chinese Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador, introduced development complexion of China national economic and social of 2005, analyzed local and overseas circumstances of presented national economic development position, respected economy development foreground in 2006, answered economic, social, and statistical issues which interested in by diplomats.

The issues involved in this conference were very extensive, there were 11 topics for discussion which included industrial statistics, commerce statistics, integrated system of economic statistics, emendatory evolvements of national accounts system of 1993, economic and social statistical classifications, ICP, environment account, energy statistics, social statistics, intentional statistical activities guideline, development indicators (monitoring focused on the UN Millennium goals), and etc. UNSD and other international organizations informed in respect of progress on population and household census, health statistics, labor and wages statistics, poverty statistics, environmental statistics, services statistics, enterprises survey sampling frames, international trade statistics, informal sector statistics, statistical capacity-building, and etc.

24 member countries (including China) of United Nations Statistical Commission have sent a delegation to attend the conference, another 50 principles or representatives as the observers from national statistical agencies, and nearly 40 representatives of relevant international organizations attended conferences.
