Note:

1. The wheat harvest in some regions of Gansu, Ningxia and Xinjiang has not yet been completed, so the data provided for these three provinces and regions are yield estimates and the actual yields shall be subject to the

forthcoming China Rural Statistical Yearbook 2026.

2. Since some data in this table are rounded off, discrepancies may exist between the total and the sum of data of all provinces, regions and municipalities.

Explanation of the Yield Survey of Summer Grain

The yield data of summer grain released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) of China were collected through two survey methods: sampling surveys conducted in major summer grain-producing areas, with each province treated as a separate survey population, and key-point surveys conducted in non-major producing areas.

(I) Statistical Coverage

Summer grain includes grains, beans and tubers harvested in summer. Among them, the grains harvested in summer mainly include wheat, barley, oat, buckwheat, etc.; beans harvested in summer mainly include broad beans, peas, etc.; and tubers harvested in summer mainly include potatoes and sweet potatoes.

(II) Survey Scope

The summer grain output data of 16 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities), including Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanxi, Jiangsu, Anhui, Shandong, Henan, Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia and Xinjiang, were obtained through sampling surveys and actual harvesting measurements organized by the respective survey teams of the NBS in over 400 selected national survey counties (cities).

The output data of summer grain from nine provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities), including Shanghai, Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan and Chongqing, were estimated according to key-point surveys conducted by relevant survey teams.

(III) Survey Sample

The sampling survey for the yield of summer grain is composed of a sampling survey for the sown area and a sampling survey for the yield per unit area.

The sampling survey for the sown area of summer grain is carried out in nationally designated survey counties (cities). Nearly 4,000 sample villages are selected nationwide, and in each village, three sample plots, each with an area of about 60 mu, are drawn. At the time of the survey, the sampling survey on the sown area within designated sample plots, as well as on all natural plots covered by these sample plots, are conducted. Based on the primary-level survey data, the provincial survey teams estimate the provincial sown area of summer grain.

The sampling survey for the yield per unit area of summer grain is carried out in sample plotsselected by nationally designated survey counties (cities). More than 8,000 sample plots from nearly 2,000 sample points are selected nationwide. Within each sample plot, three to five small quadrats, each of ten square feet, are selected as required to estimate the average wheat yield per unit area in the province, using the method of actual harvesting for measurement.

(IV) Method for Yield Measurement

The method of actual harvesting for measurement of wheat yield refers to a process where primary-level survey staff, prior to wheat harvest, conduct field visits to estimate and rank the yield of wheat plots in accordance with the Statistical Report System of Agriculture, Forestry, Animal Husbandry, and Fishery. A certain number of sample plots are selected and marked for further measurement. During the harvest period, the county-level survey staff or assistants demarcate the selected sample plots, harvest the samples, and calculate the yield per unit area of the selected plot following subsequent procedures such as threshing, drying, measuring moisture and impurities and weighing. Based on the data of sample plots, the provincial survey teams of the NBS estimate the average yield per unit area of the province.

The yield of summer grain is obtained by multiplying the sown area by the yield per unit area in the sampling survey.

(V) Others

Due to the relatively late maturity of spring wheat in some regions of Gansu, Ningxia and Xinjiang, the summer grain output data currently available are preliminary estimates.
