Announcement on Total Scale and Value-added Data of the National Sports Industry in 2024

Upon accounting, the total scale (total output) of the national sports industry in 2024 reached 3.8421 trillion yuan, with a value added of 1.6033 trillion yuan, accounting for 1.19% of the gross domestic product (GDP), an increase of 0.04 percentage points from the previous year.

A closer look at the internal structure reveals that the value added of the sports service industry in 2024 reached 1.1548 trillion yuan, accounting for 72.0% of the value added of the sports industry, a decrease of 0.7 percentage points from the previous year. The value added of the manufacture of sports goods and related products came in at 424.5 billion yuan, accounting for 26.5% of the value added of the sports industry, an increase of 0.8 percentage points over the previous year. The value added of sports facilities construction stood at 24.0 billion yuan, accounting for 1.5% of the value added of the sports industry, a decrease of 0.1 percentage points from the previous year.

1. Notes on Indicators

The total output of the sports industry refers to the value of all sports goods and services produced by all resident units in China within a specific period.

The value added of the sports industry refers to the value added generated by all resident units in China through production activities of the sports industry within a specific period.

Resident units refer to economic units that have their center of economic interests within the economic territory of China.

Production refers to the activities of creating new output of goods and services by using factors such as labor and capital under the control and management of responsible institutional units.

2. Accounting Classification

The accounting classification of the sports industry follows the Statistical Classification of Sports Industry (2019), which is derived from the Industrial Classification for National Economic Activities (GB/T 4754-2017), and reclassifies relevant activities in the GB/T 4754-2017 that meet the characteristics of the sports industry.

The accounting for the sports industry follows a two-tiered classification. According to the characteristics of activities, the first tier includes three categories: manufacture of sports goods and related products, sports facilities construction and sports service industry. On the basis of the first-tier classification, the second-tier classification further includes 178 sub-categories of national economic industries.

3. Accounting Method and Data Source

The accounting for the total output and the value added of the sports industry is conducted using both the production-based approach and the income-based approach.

The data required for accounting are mainly sourced from three parts. First, the data from censuses and special surveys,  specifically including data from the national economic census, and national special surveys on the sports industry; second, statistical data from the National Bureau of Statistics of China,  specifically including data on the national economic accounting, and statistical annual reports on a certain field; third, administrative data, such as departmental statistical data from the General Administration of Sport of China.
