Value Added of China’s Culture and Related Industries Takes up 4.61% of GDP in 2024

Uponaccounting, the value added of culture and related industries nationwide in 2024 reached 6.2094 trillion yuan, accounting for 4.61% of the gross domestic product (GDP), up by 0.02 percentage points from the previous year.

By industry, in 2024, the value added of culture-related services stood at 4.3256 trillion yuan, accounting for 69.7% of the value added of culture and related industries, an increase of 0.5 percentage points over the previous year; the value added of culture-related manufacturing came in at 1.2607 trillion yuan, accounting for 20.3%, a decrease of 0.2 percentage points over the previous year; the value added of culture-related wholesale and retail reached 623.1 billion yuan, accounting for 10.0%, a decrease of 0.3 percentage points over the previous year.

By field, in 2024, the value added of the core areas of culture stood at 4.4238 trillion yuan, accounting for 71.2% of the value added of culture and related industries; the value added of culture-related fields came in at 1.7856 trillion yuan, accounting for 28.8%.

Culture and related industries refer to the collection of production activities that provide cultural products and culture-related products for the public.

The value added of culture and related industries refers to the value added created by the production activities of culture and related industries conducted by all resident units in China within a specific period.

Resident units refer to economic units that have their center of economic interests within the economic territory of China.

Production refers tothe activities of creating new output of goods and services by using factors such as the input of labor, capital, goods and services under the control and management of institutional units.

2. Accounting Scope and Classification

The accounting scope of the value added of culture and related industries includes all cultural and related activities specified in the Classification of Culture and Related Industries (2018).

According to industry category, culture and related industries are divided into culture-related manufacturing, culture-related wholesale and retail and culture-related services. According to the nature of activities, culture and related industries are divided into two parts: the first is the core areas of culture, which refer to production activities centered on culture as their core content, aimed at directly fulfilling people’s spiritual needs through the creation, production, dissemination, and display of cultural products (including goods and services); the second is the culture-related fields, which refer to the activities required for realizing the production of cultural products, such as cultural auxiliary production and intermediary services, cultural equipment production and cultural consumption terminal production (including manufacturing and sales).

3. Accounting Method and Data Source

The value added of culture and related industries is calculated using the income-based approach, and the data required for the accounting are sourced from the national economic census data, national economic accounting data, statistical data of culture and related industries, etc.
