Value Added of China’s Tourism and Related Industries Takes up 4.35% of GDP in 2024
Based on the accounting results, the value added of tourism and related industries nationwide in 2024 reached 5.8631 trillion yuan, accounting for 4.35% of the gross domestic product (GDP), up by 0.11 percentage points from the previous year.
By composition, the value added of tourism stood at 5.3546 trillion yuan, accounting for 91.3% of the value added of tourism and related industries, an increase of 0.3 percentage points from the previous year. The value added of tourism-related industries reached 508.5 billion yuan, accounting for 8.7% of the value added of tourism and related industries, a decrease of 0.3 percentage points from the previous year.

1. Notes on Indicators
Tourism refers to the activities of tourists, including transport, accommodation, dining and catering, sightseeing, shopping, recreation and entertainment and other activities.
Tourism and related industries refer to the collection of activities that directly provide transport, accommodation, dining and catering, sightseeing, shopping, recreation and entertainment services, as well as other tourism-related services in national economic activities.
The value added of tourism and related industries refers to the value added generated by the production activities of tourism and related industries conducted by all resident units in China within a specific period.
Resident units refer to economic units that have their center of economic interests within the economic territory of China.
Production refers to the activity of creating new output of goods and services by using factors such as labor and capital under the control and management of responsible institutional units.
2. Accounting Classification
The accounting classification of value added of tourism and related industries follows the National Statistical Classification of Tourism and Related Industries (2018) issued by the National Bureau of Statistics of China, which is derived from the Industrial Classification of National Economic Activities (GB/T 4754-2017) and reclassifies relevant activities in the GB/T 4754-2017 that meet the characteristics of tourism and related industries.
The value added of tourism and related industries is compiled using a two-tiered accounting classification. The first-tier classification is divided into nine major categories based on activity characteristics: transport, accommodation, dining and catering, sightseeing, shopping, recreation and entertainment, comprehensive services, ancillary services in tourism, and government tourism management services. The second-tier classification further divides the first-tier classification into 65 subcategories (medium categories) of national economic industries.
3. Accounting Method and Data Source
The value added of tourism and related industries is compiled using both the production approach and the income approach. The data required for accounting are sourced from national economic census data, national economic accounting data, and survey data on the consumption structure of tourism and related industries.
