Value Added of China’s Agriculture and Related Industries Takes up 15.29% of GDP in 2024

Based on the accounting results, the value added of agriculture and related industries nationwide in 2024 reached 20.6173 trillion yuan, accounting for 15.29% of the gross domestic product (GDP).

By industry, for the value added of agriculture and related industries, the value added of primary, secondary, and tertiary industries accounted for 44.4%, 27.1%, and 28.4%, respectively. The primary industry recorded the highest value added and accounted for the largest share.

Among major categories of agriculture and related industries, the top three contributors to the total value added are the agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery, the processing and manufacturing of edible agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery products, and the circulation services of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery and related products, accounting for 47.0%, 19.3% and 15.4%, respectively.

1. Notes on Indicators

Agriculture and related industries refer to agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery, as well as the secondary and tertiary industries that supply inputs to, directly use outputs of, or rely on the resources of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery, including all economic activities formed by the production, processing, manufacturing, circulation, and services of these industries.

The value added of agriculture and related industries refers to the value added generated by all resident units in China through production activities of agricultural and related industries within a specific period.

Resident units refer to economic units that have their center of economic interests within the economic territory of China.

Production refers to the activities of creating new output of goods and services by using factors such as labor and capital under the control and management of responsible institutional units.

2. Accounting Classification

The accounting classification of agriculture and related industries follows the Statistical Classification of Agriculture and Related Industries (2020), which is derived from the Industrial Classification for National Economic Activities (GB/T 4754-2017) and reclassifies relevant activities in the GB/T 4754-2017 that meet the characteristics of agriculture and related industries.

3. Accounting Method and Data Source

The value added of agriculture and related industries is compiled using both the production approach and the income approach.

The data required for accounting mainly comes from three parts. First, the national economic census data; second, the routine statistical data of the National Bureau of Statistics of China, including annual industrial data of national economic accounting and annual statistical reports of relevant specialties; third, administrative data, such as departmental statistics of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and statistics of trade associations.
