Business Revenue of Enterprises above the Designated Size Engaged in Culture and Related Industries in the First Half of 2025

According to a survey of 80,000 enterprises above the designated size engaged in culture and related industries (hereinafter referred to as cultural enterprises) nationwide, in the first half of 2025, the cultural enterprises achieved a business revenue of 7,129.2 billion yuan, up by 7.4 percent [1] over that of the previous year on a comparable basis (see Annotation 2 for details). Among them, the 16 industry categories with obvious characteristics of new cultural business formats [2] achieved a business revenue of 3,156.4 billion yuan, up by 13.6 percent over that of the previous year, and 6.2 percentage points faster than that of all cultural enterprises above the designated size.

In terms of industrial types, the business revenue achieved by the culture-related manufacturing industry was 1,994.4 billion yuan, up by 3.1 percent over that of the previous year; that achieved by the culture-related wholesale and retail was 1,213.0 billion yuan, up by 4.6 percent; and that achieved by the cultural service industry was 3,921.8 billion yuan, up by 10.7 percent.

By field, the business revenue achieved by the core areas of culture [3] stood at 4,844.5 billion yuan, up by 10.0 percent over that of the previous year; that achieved by cultural related fields reached 2,284.7 billion yuan, up by 2.5 percent.

Categorized by industry type, the business revenue achieved by news and information services stood at 986.7 billion yuan, up by 10.8 percent over that of the previous year; that achieved by content creation and production was 1,657.2 billion yuan, up by 11.8 percent; that achieved by creative design services was 1,253.3 billion yuan, up by 11.8 percent; that achieved by cultural communication channels was 831.7 billion yuan, up by 3.6 percent; that achieved by cultural investment and operation was 26.2 billion yuan, up by 3.0 percent; that achieved by cultural, entertainment and leisure services was 89.4 billion yuan, up by 6.8 percent; that achieved by cultural auxiliary production and intermediary services was 764.7 billion yuan, down by 1.8 percent; that achieved by cultural equipment production was 322.8 billion yuan, up by 2.8 percent; and that achieved by cultural consumption terminal production was 1,197.2 billion yuan, up by 5.3 percent.

In terms of regions, cultural enterprises in the eastern region achieved the business revenue of 5,702.2 billion yuan, up by 7.7 percent over that of the previous year; those in the central region achieved 793.5 billion yuan, up by 6.0 percent; those in the western region achieved 571.8 billion yuan, up by 7.3 percent; and those in the northeastern region achieved 61.7 billion yuan, up by 4.8 percent.

In the first half of 2025, cultural enterprises achieved total profits of 629.8 billion yuan, up by 19.3 percent over that of the previous year; and the profit rate of the business revenue was 8.83 percent, a year-on-year increase of 0.88 percentage points. At the end of the first half of 2025, the assets of cultural enterprises totaled 22,023.9 billion yuan, up by 8.0 percent over that of the previous year; and the business revenue brought by per-hundred-yuan assets was 65.8 yuan, up by 0.1 yuan year on year.

I. Explanatory Notes

Culture and related industries refer to the collection of production activities that provide cultural products and cultural related products for the public. According to the Classification of Culture and Related Industry (2018), culture and related industries include nine categories: news and information services, content creation and production, creative design services, cultural communication channels, cultural investment and operation, cultural entertainment and leisure services, cultural auxiliary production and intermediary services, cultural equipment production and cultural consumption terminal production.

Business revenue refers to the inflow of economic benefits through production and operation activities of enterprises, such as selling commodities, providing labor services and transferring the right to use of assets in the reporting period. Business revenue includes "revenue from principal business" and "revenue from other business".

Total profit refers to the balance of various incomes minus various spending in the course of operation, reflecting the total profits and losses of enterprises in the reporting period.

Total assets refer to all resources that are owned or controlled by enterprises through previous trades or transactions at the end of the reporting period, with expectation of bringing economic profits to enterprises.

Profit rate of business revenue=total profit ÷ business revenue×100%, unit: %.

Business revenue brought by per-hundred-yuan assets=business revenue ÷ average assets ÷ accumulative months×12×100, unit: yuan.

II. Statistical Coverage

The statistical scope of cultural and related industries above the designated size is industrial enterprises within the industry scope specified in the Classification of Cultural and Related Industry (2018) with an annual main business revenue of 20 million yuan or above; wholesale enterprises with annual main business revenue of 20 million yuan or above or retail enterprises with annual main business revenue of 5 million yuan or above; service enterprises with an annual business revenue of 10 million yuan or above, of which the transport, storage and post, information transmission, software and information technology services, water conservancy, environment and public facilities management with annual business revenue of 20 million yuan or above, and residential services, repair and other services, culture, sports and entertainment with annual business revenue of 5 million yuan or above.

As the scope of enterprises above the designated size engaged in culture and related industries changes every year, in order to ensure that the data of this year are comparable with that of the previous year, the prior period data used to calculate the year-on-year growth rate of indicators, such as the business revenue of enterprises above the designated size engaged in culture and related industries, should be consistent with the statistical scope of enterprises in this period, and there will be a difference in caliber from the data published last year. The main reason is that every year, some enterprises that meet the standards to be above the designated size are included in the scope of survey. At the same time, some enterprises withdraw from the scope of survey due to their smaller scale, and there are also the effects of enterprises that are newly established, bankrupt, or deregistered (administratively revoked).

III. Survey Method

Every quarter, the cultural and related industrial legal entities above the designated size shall be identified and summarized according to the data obtained from the comprehensive survey of Industrial enterprises above the designated size, wholesale and retail enterprises above the designated size and service enterprises above the designated size on the national statistical online direct reporting platform.

IV. Division on Eastern, Central, Western and Northeastern Regions

The eastern region includes 10 provinces (municipalities): Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Shandong, Guangdong and Hainan; the central region includes 6 provinces: Shanxi, Anhui, Jiangxi, Henan, Hubei and Hunan; the western region includes 12 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities): Inner Mongolia, Guangxi, Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Xizang, Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia and Xinjiang; the northeastern region includes 3 provinces: Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang.
