Value Added of China's Tourism and Related Industries Takes up 4.24 pct of GDP in 2023

Based on the findings of China's Fifth National Economic Census, the value added of tourism and related industries nationwide in 2023 has been revised to 5.4832 trillion yuan, accounting for 4.24 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP), up by 0.57 percentage point from the previous year[1].

In terms of internal structure, the value added of tourism stood at 4.9890 trillion yuan, accounting for 91.0 percent of the value added of tourism and related industries, an increase of 1.7 percentage points over the previous year. The value added of tourism-related industries reached 494.2 billion yuan, accounting for 9.0 percent of the value added of tourism and related industries, a decrease of 1.7 percentage points over the previous year.

1. Explanatory Notes

Tourists refer to those who go to places outside of their usual environment for the purpose of sightseeing, leisure and entertainment, visiting relatives and friends, culture and sports, health care and medical services, short-term education (training), religious worship, or for reasons of official duties or business with the travel duration less than one year.

Tourism refers to the activities of tourists, including transport, accommodation, dining and catering, sightseeing, shopping, recreation and entertainment and other activities.

Tourism and related industries refer to the collection of activities that directly provide transport, accommodation, dining and catering, sightseeing, shopping, recreation and entertainment and other tourism-related services for tourists in national economic activities, as well as the associated service activities that support tourism.

The value added of tourism and related industries refers to the value added created by the production activities of tourism and related industries conducted by all resident units in China within a specific period.

Resident units refer to economic units that have their center of economic interests within the economic territory of China.

Production refers to the activity of creating new output of goods and services by using factors such as labor and capital under the control and management of institutional units responsible for it.

2. Accounting Classification

The accounting classification of value added of tourism and related industries is based on the National Tourism and Related Industries Statistical Classification (2018) issued by the National Bureau of Statistics of China. The National Tourism and Related Industries Statistical Classification (2018) is a derivative classification of the National Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (GB/T 4754-2017), which is a reclassification of activities in line with the characteristics of tourism and related industries in the National Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (GB/T 4754-2017).

The accounting for the value added of tourism and related industries adopts two-tiered accounting classification. The first-tier classification is divided into nine major categories based on the characteristics of the activities: transport, accommodation, dining and catering, sightseeing, shopping, recreation and entertainment, comprehensive services, ancillary services in tourism, and tourism management services by government. The second-tier classification is divided into 65 subcategories (middle categories) of national economic industries.

3. Accounting Method and Data Source

The accounting for the value added of tourism and related industries shall be conducted using both the production approach and the income approach. The data required for the accounting are sourced from national economic census data, national economic accounting data, and the survey data of consumption structure of tourism and related industries.
