Value Added of China's Agriculture and Related Industries Takes up 15.34 pct of GDP in 2023

Based on the findings of China's Fifth National Economic Census, the value added of agriculture and related industries nationwide in 2023 has been revised to 19.8534 trillion yuan, accounting for 15.34 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP).

In terms of three industries, among the value added of agriculture and related industries, the value added of primary, secondary and tertiary industries accounted for 44.9, 27.0 and 28.1 percent respectively. The value added of primary industry was the largest and accounted for the highest.

From the perspective of agriculture and related industries, the top three contributors to the total value added are the agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery, the processing and manufacturing of edible agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery products, and the circulation services of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery and related products, accounting for 47.3, 19.2 and 15.6 percent respectively.

1. Explanatory Notes

Agriculture and related industries refer to agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery, as well as the secondary and tertiary industries that support these sectors by supplying products for their use, directly utilizing their outputs, or relying on their resources, which include all economic activities formed by agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery production, processing, manufacturing, circulation, service and other related links.

The value added of agriculture and related industries refers to the value added generated by all resident units in China through production activities of agricultural and related industries within a specific period.

Resident units refer to economic units that have their center of economic interests within the economic territory of China.

Production refers to the activity of creating new output of goods and services by using factors such as labor and capital under the control and management of institutional units responsible for it.

2. Accounting Classification

The accounting classification of agriculture and related industries adopts the Statistical Classification of Agriculture and Related Industries (2020). The Statistical Classification of Agriculture and Related Industries (2020) is a derived classification from the National Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (GB/T4754-2017) and a reclassification of relevant activities in line with the characteristics of agriculture and related industries in the National Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (GB/T4754-2017).

3. Accounting Method and Data Source

The accounting for the value added of agriculture and related industries shall be conducted using both the production approach and the income approach.

The data required for accounting mainly comes from three parts. First, the national economic census data; Second, the routine statistical data of the National Bureau of Statistics of China, including annual industry data of national economic accounting and annual statistical reports of relevant specialties; Third, administrative data, such as departmental statistics of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and statistics of trade associations.
