——Basic Information of the Secondary Industry

Based on the results of the fifth national economic census, the major data of the secondary industry (including industry and construction) are released as the following:
I. Industry
1. Number of Corporate Enterprises and Persons Employed
By the end of 2023, there were 4.236 million industrial corporate enterprises[1] nationwide, up by 22.7 percent compared with that at the end of 2018; persons employed reached 114.289 million, down by 0.8 percent compared with that at the end of 2018.
Among the industrial corporate enterprises, 4.118 million were domestic funded enterprises, taking up 97.2 percent; 43 thousand were funded by investors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, taking up 1.0 percent; and 40 thousand were foreign funded enterprises, taking up 0.9 percent.
Among persons employed by industrial corporate enterprises, 99.592 million were employed by domestic funded enterprises, taking up 87.1 percent; 7.265 million were employed by enterprises funded by investors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, taking up 6.4 percent; and 7.264 million were employed by foreign funded enterprises, taking up 6.4 percent (Table 3-1).

Among industrial corporate enterprises, there were 52 thousand mining enterprises, 4.048 million manufacturing enterprises and 136 thousand enterprises of production and supply of electricity, heat power, gas and water, taking up 1.2 percent, 95.6 percent and 3.2 percent respectively. Within the entire industry, the top three divisions in terms of number of corporate enterprises were the manufacture of metal products, the manufacture of general purpose machinery and the manufacture of non-metallic mineral products, taking up 10.7 percent, 10.1 percent and 7.2 percent respectively.
In terms of persons employed by industrial corporate enterprises, 4.698 million persons were in mining industry, 104.814 million were in manufacturing, and 4.776 million were in production and supply of electricity, heat power, gas and water, taking up 4.1%, 91.7% and 4.2% respectively. Within the entire industry, the top three divisions were the manufacture of computer, communication equipment and other electronic equipment, the manufacture of electrical machinery and equipment, and the manufacture of general purpose machinery, taking up 9.2 percent, 7.1 percent and 7.0 percent respectively (Table 3-2).

2. Main Economic Indicators
At the end of 2023, the total assets of industrial corporate enterprises reached 201.01515 trillion yuan, an increase of 44.3 percent compared with that at the end of 2018. The total liabilities were 114.28483 trillion yuan, an increase of 45.9 percent compared with that at the end of 2018.
At the end of 2023, the business revenue of industrial corporate enterprises reached 152.38173 trillion yuan, an increase of 28.6 percent compared with that of 2018 (Table 3-3).

II. Construction
1. Number of Corporate Enterprises and Persons Employed
At the end of 2023, there were 2.722 million construction corporate enterprises, up by 123.5 percent compared with that at the end of 2018; with 51.159 million persons employed, down by 11.9 percent compared with that at the end of 2018.
Among the construction corporate enterprises, 2.719 million were domestic funded enterprises, taking up 99.9 percent; about 2 thousand were funded by investors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, taking up 0.1 percent; and 1 thousand were foreign funded enterprises, taking up 0.03 percent.
In terms of persons employed by construction corporate enterprises, 51.026 million persons were employed by domestic funded enterprises, accounting for 99.7 percent; 79 thousand were employed by enterprises funded by investors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, taking up 0.2 percent; and 51 thousand were employed by foreign funded enterprises, taking up 0.1 percent (Table 3-6).

Among construction corporate enterprises, 29.3 percent were house building enterprises, 20.4 percent were civil engineering enterprises, 10.4 percent were installation enterprises and 39.9 percent were enterprises for decoration, renovation and others.
In terms of persons employed by construction corporate enterprises, house building enterprises took up 50.6 percent, civil engineering enterprises 22.0 percent, installation enterprises 7.5 percent, and enterprises for decoration, renovation and others 19.9 percent (Table 3-7).

2. Main Economic Indicators
At the end of 2023, the total assets of construction corporate enterprises reached 52,299.44 billion yuan, an increase of 52.8 percent compared with that at the end of 2018. The total liabilities were 36,672.65 billion yuan, an increase of 64.4 percent compared with that at the end of 2018.
In 2023, the business revenue of construction corporate enterprises reached 37,093.18 billion yuan, an increase of 44.7 percent compared with that of 2018 (Table 3-8).
