Based on the results of the Fifth National Economic Census, the major data of wholesale and retail trade, transportation, storage and post, hotels and catering services, information transmission, software and information technology services, finance, real estate, and leasing and business services in the tertiary industry are disseminated as the following:

I. Wholesale and Retail Trade

1. Number of Corporate Enterprises and Persons Employed

At the end of 2023, there were 10.197 million corporate enterprises[1] engaged in wholesale and retail trade with a total of 53.257 million persons employed, up by 56.9 percent and 32.9 percent respectively as compared with those at the end of 2018.

Of the total number of corporate enterprises in wholesale and retail trade, wholesale accounted for 54.0 percent and retail trade accounted for 46.0 percent. Of the total number of persons employed, wholesale accounted for 56.2 percent and retail trade accounted for 43.8 percent (Table 4-1).

Of the total number of corporate enterprises in wholesale and retail trade, domestic funded enterprises accounted for 97.9 percent, enterprises funded by investors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 0.3 percent, and foreign funded enterprises 0.3 percent.

Of the total number of persons employed, those in domestic funded enterprises accounted for 95.3 percent, those in enterprises funded by investors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 1.8 percent, and those in foreign funded enterprises 2.0 percent (Table 4-2).

2. Main Economic Indicators

At the end of 2023, the total assets of the corporate enterprises engaged in wholesale and retail trade reached 93.01533 trillion yuan, an increase of 74.0 percent as compared with that at the end of 2018. The total liabilities were 64.05628 trillion yuan, up by 76.1 percent as compared with that at the end of 2018.

In 2023, the business revenue of the corporate enterprises engaged in wholesale and retail trade of the year reached 153.81038 trillion yuan, an increase of 74.5 percent as compared with that of 2018 (Table 4-3).

At the end of 2023, there were 934 thousand corporate enterprises engaged in the transportation, storage and post industries with a total of 15.542 million persons employed, up by 63.9 percent and 11.3 percent respectively as compared with those at the end of 2018 (Table 4-4).

Of the total number of corporate enterprises engaged in transportation, storage and post, the domestic funded enterprises accounted for 98.9 percent, enterprises funded by investors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 0.4 percent, and foreign funded enterprises 0.3 percent.

Of the total number of persons employed, those in domestic funded enterprises accounted for 96.4 percent, those in enterprises funded by investors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 2.3 percent and those in foreign funded enterprises 1.2 percent (Table 4-5).

2. Main Economic Indicators

At the end of 2023, the total assets of the corporate enterprises engaged in transportation, storage and post reached 57.38034 trillion yuan, up by 62.9 percent over that at the end of 2018. The total liabilities were 34.90737 trillion yuan, an increase of 63.4 percent over that at the end of 2018.

In 2023, the business revenue of the corporate enterprises engaged in transportation, storage and post reached 13.47589 trillion yuan, up by 56.0 percent compared with that of 2018 (Table 4-6).

III. Hotels and Catering Services

1. Number of Corporate Enterprises and Persons Employed

At the end of 2023, there were 712 thousand corporate enterprises engaged in hotels and catering services with a total of 8.936 million persons employed, up by 65.1 percent and 26.5 percent respectively as compared with those at the end of 2018.

Of the total number of corporate enterprises in hotels and catering services, hotels accounted for 26.9 percent and catering services accounted for 73.1 percent. Of the total number of persons employed, 31.3 percent worked in hotels and 68.7 percent in catering services (Table 4-7).

Of the total number of corporate enterprises in hotels and catering services, domestic funded enterprises accounted for 99.0 percent, enterprises funded by investors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 0.5 percent and foreign funded enterprises 0.3 percent.

Among the total number of persons employed, the proportion of those in domestic funded enterprises was 88.9 percent, that in enterprises funded by investors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 5.9 percent and that in foreign funded enterprises 5.2 percent (Table 4-8).

2. Main Economic Indicators

At the end of 2023, the total assets of the corporate enterprises engaged in hotels and catering services reached 3,699.42 billion yuan, an increase of 33.6 percent as compared with that at the end of 2018. The total liabilities were 2,777.03 billion yuan, an increase of 49.5 percent as compared with that at the end of 2018.

In 2023, the business revenue of the corporate enterprises engaged in hotels and catering services of the year reached 2,231.65 billion yuan, up by 63.5 percent as compared with that of 2018 (Table 4-9).

At the end of 2023, there were 1.691 million corporate enterprises engaged in information transmission, software and information technology services with a total of 15.067 million persons employed, up by 85.2 percent and 51.4 percent respectively as compared with those at the end of 2018 (Table 4-10).

Of the total number of corporate enterprises engaged in information transmission, software and information technology services, the proportion of domestic funded enterprises was 98.9 percent, that of enterprises funded by investors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 0.7 percent and that of foreign funded enterprises 0.4 percent.

Of the total number of persons employed, the proportion of those in domestic funded enterprises was 90.4 percent, that in enterprises funded by investors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 5.7 percent and that in foreign funded enterprises 3.9 percent (Table 4-11).

At the end of 2023, the total assets of the corporate enterprises engaged in information transmission, software and information technology services reached 29,957.05 billion yuan, up by 97.1 percent as compared with that at the end of 2018. The total liabilities were 15,797.11 billion yuan, up by 119.8 percent over that at the end of 2018.

In 2023, the business revenue of the corporate enterprises engaged in information transmission, software and information technology services reached 15,205.14 billion yuan, up by 117.0 percent as compared with that of 2018 (Table 4-12).

2. Main Economic Indicators

At the end of 2023, the total assets of the corporate enterprises engaged in finance reached 505,906.08 billion yuan, up by 57.2 percent as compared with that at the end of 2018. The total liabilities were 433,852.55 billion yuan, an increase of 58.1 percent as compared with that at the end of 2018.

In 2023, the business revenue of the corporate enterprises engaged in finance of the year reached 17,253.45 billion yuan, an increase of 25.8 percent as compared with that of 2018 (Table 4-14).

VI. Real Estate

1. Number of Corporate Enterprises and Persons Employed

At the end of 2023, there were 1.040 million corporate enterprises engaged in real estate, an increase of 40.2 percent as compared with that at the end of 2018. Of this total, the number of enterprises for real estate development and operation was 206 thousand, that for property management 375 thousand and that for real estate intermediary services 300 thousand, up by 0.2 percent, 59.8 percent and 45.9 percent respectively as compared with those at the end of 2018.

At the end of 2023, there were 14.398 million persons employed by the corporate enterprises in real estate, up by 14.0 percent as compared with that at the end of 2018. Of this total, the number of persons employed in real estate development and operation enterprises was 2.713 million, a decline of 27.0 percent as compared with that at the end of 2018; that in property management 8.543 million, and that in real estate intermediary services 1.867 million, up by 34.1 percent and 18.0 percent respectively over those at the end of 2018 (Table 4-15).

Of the total number of corporate enterprises engaged in real estate, the proportion of domestic funded enterprises was 98.5 percent, that of enterprises funded by investors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 1.1 percent and that of foreign funded enterprises 0.4 percent.

Of the total number of persons employed, the proportion of those in domestic funded enterprises was 96.7 percent, that in enterprises funded by investors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 2.5 percent and that in foreign funded enterprises 0.8 percent (Table 4-16).

2. Main Economic Indicators

At the end of 2023, the total assets of the corporate enterprises engaged in real estate reached 169,286.75 billion yuan, an increase of 46.0 percent as compared with that at the end of 2018. Of the total, the assets of enterprises for real estate development and operation were 136,296.17 billion yuan, that of property management 5,302.15 billion yuan, and that of real estate intermediary services 2,480.58 billion yuan, up by 35.5 percent, 72.9 percent and 86.4 percent respectively as compared with those at the end of 2018. The total liabilities of the corporate enterprises engaged in real estate were 125,549.22 billion yuan, an increase of 41.1 percent as compared with that at the end of 2018.

In 2023, the business revenue of the corporate enterprises engaged in real estate of the year reached 19,327.24 billion yuan, an increase of 34.5 percent as compared with that of 2018 (Table 4-17).

At the end of 2023, there were 4.573 million corporate enterprises engaged in leasing and business services with a total of 38.583 million persons employed, up by 82.5 percent and 72.5 percent respectively as compared with those at the end of 2018.

Of the total number of corporate enterprises in leasing and business services, leasing accounted for 11.2 percent and business services accounted for 88.8 percent. Of the total number of persons employed, 7.7 percent worked in leasing and 92.3 percent in business services (Table 4-18).

At the end of 2023, the total assets of the corporate enterprises engaged in leasing and business services reached 185,629.14 billion yuan, up by 67.5 percent as compared with that at the end of 2018. Of the total, the assets of enterprises for leasing were 2,905.84 billion yuan, and that of business services 182,723.31 billion yuan, up by 89.7 percent and 67.2 percent respectively as compared with those at the end of 2018. The total liabilities of the corporate enterprises engaged in leasing and business services were 95,867.85 billion yuan, up by 64.1 percent as compared with that at the end of 2018.

In 2023, the business revenue of the corporate enterprises engaged in leasing and business services of the year reached 16,060.95 billion yuan, up by 88.1 percent as compared with that of 2018 (Table 4-20).
