Communiqué on the Fifth National Economic Census (No. 7)

——Information of Units and Persons Employed by Region

Based on the results of the Fifth National Economic Census, the basic information of the units and persons employed in the secondary and tertiary industries by region is released as the following:

I. Information of the Eastern, Central, Western and Northeastern Regions

1. Information of the Units

By the end of 2023, there were 17.941 million legal entities engaged in the secondary and tertiary industries in the eastern region, accounting for 53.9 percent of the legal entities engaged in the secondary and tertiary industries in China, 2.0 percentage points lower than that at the end of 2018; there were 7.334 million in the central region, accounting for 22.0 percent, 1.4 percentage points higher; there were 6.372 million in the western region, accounting for 19.2 percent, 0.6 percentage points higher; there were 1.623 million in the northeastern region, accounting for 4.9 percent, basically maintaining the same level as that at the end of 2018.

By the end of 2023, the number of establishments[1] engaged in the secondary and tertiary industries in the eastern region was 19.305 million, accounting for 53.1 percent of the establishments engaged in the secondary and tertiary industries in China; that in the central region was 8.054 million, accounting for 22.1 percent; that in the western region was 7.183 million, accounting for 19.8 percent; and that in the northeastern region was 1.818 million, accounting for 5.0 percent.

Of the total number of legal entities of the secondary and tertiary industries, the top three provinces were: Guangdong province with 4.659 million, accounting for 14.0 percent; Jiangsu province with 2.907 million, accounting for 8.7 percent; and Shandong province with 2.785 million, accounting for 8.4 percent.

2. Persons Employed

By the end of 2023, there were 224.328 million persons employed by legal entities of the secondary and tertiary industries in the eastern region of China, accounting for 52.3 percent of the total population employed by legal entities of the secondary and tertiary industries nationwide, 1.8 percentage points lower than that at the end of 2018; there were 98.907 million in the central region, accounting for 23.1 percent, 1.1 percentage points higher; there were 86.320 million in the western region, accounting for 20.1 percent, 0.8 percentage points higher; and there were 19.428 million in the northeastern region, accounting for 4.5 percent, 0.2 percentage points lower.

Of the total number of persons employed by legal entities of the secondary and tertiary industries, the top three provinces were: Guangdong province with 52.857 million, accounting for 12.3 percent; Jiangsu province with 38.816 million, accounting for 9.0 percent; and Shandong province with 32.509 million, accounting for 7.6 percent.

II. Information of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region, the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the Yangtze River Delta and the Yellow River Basin

By the end of 2023, there were 3.099 million legal entities of the secondary and tertiary industries in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region, an increase of 668 thousand over that at the end of 2018, up by 27.5 percent. There were 35.314 million persons employed by the above legal entities, an increase of 2.027 million over that at the end of 2018, up by 6.1 percent.

There were 13.872 million legal entities of the secondary and tertiary industries in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, an increase of 5.012 million over that at the end of 2018, up by 56.6 percent. There were 194.810 million persons employed by the above legal entities, an increase of 21.008 million over that at the end of 2018, up by 12.1 percent.

There were 7.288 million legal entities of the secondary and tertiary industries in the Yangtze River Delta, an increase of 2.435 million over that at the end of 2018, up by 50.2 percent. There were 101.744 million persons employed by the above legal entities, an increase of 7.228 million over that at the end of 2018, up by 7.6 percent.

There were 8.851 million legal entities of the secondary and tertiary industries in the nine provinces (regions) along the Yellow River Basin, an increase of 3.346 million over that at the end of 2018, up by 60.8 percent. There were 112.967 million persons employed by the above legal entities, an increase of 15.172 million over that at the end of 2018, up by 15.5 percent.

Note:

[1] Establishment is a component of legal entity. The legal entity that is made up of only one establishment is call single-establishment legal entity, which is also an establishment at the same time; that is made up of two and more than two establishments is called multi -establishment legal entity. The establishments in the Communiqué include single-establishment legal entities and establishments affiliated to multi-establishment legal entities.

[1] The eastern region includes: Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Shandong, Guangdong and Hainan; the central region covers: Shanxi, Anhui, Jiangxi, Henan, Hubei and Hunan; the western region includes: Inner Mongolia, Guangxi, Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Xizang, Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia and Xinjiang; the northeastern region includes: Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang.

[2] The Yangtze River Economic Belt covers: Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan.

[3] The Yangtze River Delta covers: Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui.

[4] The nine provinces (regions) along the Yellow River Basin include: Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Shandong, Henan, Sichuan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai and Ningxia.
