Added Value of China's Tourism and Related Industries Takes up 3.71% of GDP in 2022

According to accounting, the added value of national tourism and related industries in 2022 came in at 4,467.2 billion yuan, a decrease of 1.8 percent over the previous year (not excluding price factors, the same below), accounting for 3.71 percent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP), a decrease of 0.25 percentage point over the previous year.

 

In terms of internal structure, the added value of tourism was 3,970.8 billion yuan, accounting for 88.9 percent of the added value of tourism and related industries, a decrease of 0.6 percentage point over the previous year. The added value of tourism-related industries was 496.4 billion yuan, accounting for 11.1 percent of the added value of tourism and related industries, an increase of 0.6 percentage point over the previous year.

 

In terms of growth rate, tourism catering, tourism accommodation, tourism shopping and tourism entertainment were affected by the epidemic, down by 8.7 percent, 5.0 percent, 4.2 percent and 4.1 percent respectively. Tourism-related industries maintained positive growth with growth rate of 4.3 percent.

I. Explanatory Notes

 

Tourists refer to those who go to places other than the usual environment for the purpose of sightseeing, leisure and entertainment, visiting relatives and friends, culture and sports, health care, short-term education (training), religious worship, or for reasons of official duties or business with the travel duration less than one year.

 

Tourism refers to the activities of tourists, including travel, accommodation, catering, sightseeing, shopping, entertainment and other activities.

 

Tourism and related industries refer to the collection of activities that directly provide travel, accommodation, food, tourism, shopping, entertainment and other tourism services for tourists in national economic activities, as well as related services for tourism.

 

The added value of tourism and related industries refers to the added value created by all permanent resident units of a country for tourism and related industrial production activities within a certain period of time.

 

The term "resident unit" refers to an economic unit with a center of economic interests in China's economic territory.

 

Production refers to the activities of creating new output of goods and services by using factors including labor, capital under the control and organization of institutional units.

 

II. Accounting Classification

 

The accounting classification of value-added of tourism and related industries is based on the National Tourism and Related Industries Statistical Classification (2018) issued by the National Bureau of Statistics of China. The National Tourism and Related Industries Statistical Classification (2018) is a derivative classification of the Industrial Classification for National Economic Activities (GB/T 4754-2017), which is a re-classification of activities in line with the characteristics of tourism and related industries in the Industrial Classification for National Economic Activities (GB / T 4754-2017).

 

The value-added accounting of tourism and related industries adopts two-level accounting classification. According to the characteristics of the activities, the first level is divided into nine categories: tourism travel, tourism accommodation, tourism catering, tourism sightseeing, tourism shopping, tourism entertainment, tourism comprehensive services, tourism auxiliary services and tourism management services by government. On the basis of the first level classification, the second level classification is subdivided into 65 small categories (middle categories) of national economic industries.

 

III. Accounting Method and Data Source

 

The value-added of tourism and related industries shall be calculated in the income approach and the production approach. The data required for the accounting are from the data of the national economic census, the national economic accounting and the survey data of consumption structure of tourism and related industries.
