Announcement on Total Scale and Value-added Data of National Sports Industry in 2022

According to accounting, in 2022, the total scale (total output) of the sports industry in China came in at 3,300.8 billion yuan, and the added value reached 1,309.2 billion yuan. Compared with 2021, the total output of the sports industry increased by 5.9 percent (not excluding price factors, the same below), and the added value increased by 6.9 percent.
From the perspective of internal structure, the added value of the sports service industry was 918.0 billion yuan, accounting for 70.1 percent of the added value of the sports industry, an increase of 0.1 percentage point over the previous year. The added value of the manufacture of sports goods and related products was 368.6 billion yuan, accounting for 28.2 percent of the added value of the sports industry, an increase of 0.2 percentage points over the previous year. The added value of construction of sports facilities was 22.6 billion yuan, accounting for 1.7 percent of the added value of the sports industry, a decrease of 0.2 percentage point over the previous year.
In terms of growth rate, the sports industry has enjoyed rapid growth. Compared with last year, the added value of sports managemnet activities increased by 16.3 percent, that of sports competition performance activities increased by 11.7 percent, that of sports media and information services increased by 11.3 percent, that of other sports services increased by 8.7 percent, that of physical fitness and leisure activities increased by 7.8 percent, that of manufacture of sports goods and related products increased by 7.3 percent, that of management of sports venues and facilities increased by 7.2 percent.

Annotations:
I. Explanatory Notes
The total output of the sports industry refers to the value of all sports goods and services produced by all resident units of a country in a certain period of time.
The value added of sports industry refers to the added value created by the production activities of sports industry in a certain period of time by all permanent resident units of a country.
Resident unit refers to the economic unit with the center of economic interests within the scope of China's economic territory.
Production is an activity to create new output of goods and services by using labor, capital and other factors under the control and management of institutional units.
II. Accounting Classification
The accounting classification of the sports industry adopts Statistical Classification of Sports Industry (2019), which is a derivative classification of the Industrial Classification for National Economic Activities (GB/T4754-2017), which is a re-classification of activities in line with the characteristics of sports industry in the Industrial Classification for National Economic Activities (GB/T4754-2017).
Sports industry accounting adopts two-level accounting classification. According to the characteristics of activities, the first level is divided into three categories: manufacture of sports goods and related products, sports facilities construction and sports services. On the basis of the first level classification, the second level classification is subdivided into 178 small categories of national economic industries.
III. Accounting Method and Data Source
The accounting for the total output and added value of the sports industry is conducted in the production approach and the income approach.
The data needed for accounting mainly comes from three parts. First, census data and special survey data, including national economic census data, and national sports industry special survey data, etc.; second, statistical data of National Bureau of Statistics of China, including national economic accounting data, relevant professional statistical annual report data, etc.; third, administrative data, such as departmental statistical data of General Administration of Sport of China.
