Communiqué of the Seventh National Population Census[1] (No. 5)

－Age Composition

Based on the results of the Seventh National Population Census, released as follows are the information of age composition of the population in 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government (hereinafter referred to as provinces) and the servicemen of the Chinese mainland at 00:00 hours of November 1, 2020.

I. Age Composition of the National Population

Of the national population[2], 253383938 persons were in the age group of 0-14[3], accounting for 17.95 percent; 894376020 persons in the age group of 15-59, accounting for 63.35 percent and 264018766 persons in the age group of 60 and over, accounting for 18.70 percent; of which, 190635280 persons were in the age group of 65 and over, accounting for 13.50 percent. As compared with the results of the Sixth National Population Census conducted in 2010, the share of people in the age group of 0-14 was up by 1.35 percentage points, that of the age group of 15-59 was down by 6.79 percentage points, that of the age group of 60 and over was up by 5.44 percentage points and that of the age group of 65 and over was up by 4.63 percentage points.

II. Age Composition of Regional Population

Of the 31 provinces, 13 provinces had the share of people in the age group of 15-59 over 65 percent, 15 provinces between 60 percent to 65 percent and 3 provinces below 60 percent.

The share of people aged 65 and over of the other 30 provinces were all over 7 percent except Tibet and that of 12 provinces were over 14 percent.

Notes:

1. All figures in the Communiqué are preliminary results. Due to the rounding-off reasons, the subentries may not add up to the aggregate totals.

2. The national population refers to the population of the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government and servicemen of the Chinese mainland, excluding residents of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and foreigners living in the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government.

3. There were 268707162 persons in the age group of 0-15 and 879052796 persons in the age group of 16-59.
