This Communiqué contains data on the tertiary industry as a result of the First National Economic Census of China.

I. Transport, Storage and Post Service

1. Number of Corporations and Employees

By the end of 2004, there were altogether 0.073million corporations engaged in the transport, storage and post service sectors with a total employment [1] of 7.607million people, there were 6.217million individual households engaged in transport with a total number of 9.334million people, and there were 8 thousand departments and institutions engaged in transport, storage and post services with a total number of 0.408million people.

Of the total number of corporations engaged in transport, storage and post service sectors [2], the proportion of transport accounted for 83.5 percent, that of storage 14.0 percent and 2.5 percent for post service. In terms of employment structure, the proportion of people engaged in transport accounted for 85.9 percent, that of the storage 5.2 percent, and 8.9 percent for post service (see table 1).

2. Assets, Liabilities and Equity

By the end of 2004, the total assets of the corporations engaged in transport, storage and post service sectors reached 3,576.32 billion yuan, of this total, the transport accounted for 89.2 percent, storage 7.2 percent, and 3.6 percent for post service. The total liabilities amounted to 1,705.02 billion yuan, of this total, that of transport accounted for 87.7 percent, storage 10.5 percent and 1.8 percent fro post service. The total equity was 1,817.30 billion yuan; the shares of transport, storage and post service were 90.7 percent, 4.2 percent and 5.1 percent respectively (see table 2).

The asset and liability ratio of corporations engaged in transport, storage and post service sectors was 47.7 percent, in terms of different sectors, it was 46.8 percent for transport, 69.5 percent for storage and 24.6 percent for post service

The total assets of government agencies and institutions engaged in transport, storage and post service sectors were 74.75 billion yuan.

3. Business Revenue and Gross Profits from Principal Activities

In 2004, the total business revenue generated by principal activities of corporations engaged in transport, storage and post service sectors were 1,166.11 billion yuan. of this total, that of the transport accounted for 87.5 percent, storage 7.7 percent, post service 4.8 percent. The business revenue generated by government agencies and institutions engaged in transport, storage and post service sectors was 28.82 billion yuan. The business revenue of self-employed individuals engaged in transport was 770.17 billion yuan.

The gross profits made by corporations engaged in transport, storage and post service sectors was 102.24 billion yuan, of which that of transport accounted for 98.8 percent, and 2.3 percent for storage (see table 3).

II. Real Estate Sector

1. Number of corporations and Employees

By the end of 2004, there were 0.129million corporations engaged in real estate sector, with a total employment of 3.963million people (see table 4). There were 0.038million individual households engaged in real estate sector absorbing 0.091million people.

2. Assets, Liabilities and Equity

By the end of 2004, the total assets of the corporations engaged in real estate sector reached 6,977.47 billion yuan, the total liabilities amounted to 5,065.3 billion yuan, and total equity was 1,912.17 billion yuan. The asset and liability ratio was 72.6 percent for corporations engaged in real estate sector, in terms of different industries, it was 74.1 percent for real estate development, 62.5 percent for property management, 54.9 percent for intermediate services and 61.0 percent for other activities (see table 5).

3. Business revenue and Gross Profits from Principal Activities

In 2004, the total business revenue generated by principal activities of corporations engaged in real estate sector was 1,474.06 billion yuan, and the gross profits reached 122.55 billion yuan (see table 6). The business revenue of individual households was 5.19 billion yuan.

4. Production and Management Situation of Real Estate Sector

In 2004, the floor space of commercial buildings under construction was 1,476.83 million square meters, the floor space of commercial buildings completed was 526.38 million square meters, and the floor space of commercial buildings sold was 453.62 million square meters. Of this total, the floor space of residential buildings sold was 397.23 million square meters. The total sales of commercial buildings were 1,260.13 billion yuan, that of the residential buildings were 1,035.96 billion yuan.

The floor space of buildings under the property management enterprises was 2882.52 million square meters; the contracted floor space sold from the estate agent enterprises was 86.62 million square meters with the contracted value reaching 505.23 billion yuan.

III. Wholesale and Retail Trade

1. Number of corporations, Employees and Business Volume

By the end of 2004, there were altogether 0.884million corporations engaged in wholesale and retail trade with total employment of 13.825 million people. The total wholesale and retail trade sales[3] for the whole year were 12,315.24 billion yuan, of this total, that of the wholesale trade was 10,204.24 billion yuan, and that of the retail trade was 2,111 billion yuan (see table 7).

There were 2.148 million individual households engaged in wholesale trade with a total number of 5.03 million people, that of the retail trade were 16.162 million individual households absorbing another 27.923 million people.

Of the total number of corporations in wholesale and retail trades, the proportion of state-owned, state joint ownership and state sole funded corporations was 8.3 percent, that of the collective, collective joint ownership and Share-holding cooperatives corporations was 12.8 percent, the private enterprises 63.0 percent, enterprises with funds from Hong Kong Macao and Taiwan accounted for 0.3 percent and 0.8 percent for foreign funded enterprises, and others accounted for 14.8 percent.

Of the total number of employees, the proportion of those in state-owned, state joint ownership and state sole funded corporations accounted for 20.0 percent, state-owned, state joint ownership and state sole funded corporations was 12.7 percent, the private enterprises 39.2 percent, enterprises with funds from Hong Kong Macao and Taiwan accounted for 0.9 percent and 2.0 percent for foreign funded enterprises and others accounted for 25.2 percent (see table 8).

By the end of 2004, the total assets of the corporations engaged in wholesale and retail trades reached 6,179.58 billion yuan, the total liabilities amounted to 4,316.38 billion yuan, the total equity was 1,863.20 billion yuan. The assets and liability ratio was 69.8 percent, in terms of different trade, that of the wholesale trade was 70.7 percent and that of the retail trade was 66.6 percent (see table 9).

The business revenue of individual households engaged in wholesale trade was 1,394.45 billion yuan, that of those engaged in retail trade was 2,743.87 billion yuan.

IV. Hotel and Catering Services

1. Number of corporations, Employees and Business Volume

By the end of 2004, there were altogether 0.093 million corporations engaged in hotel and catering services with total employment of 4.293million people. The business volume [4] for the whole year was 310.67 billion yuan (see table 11).

There were 0.178 million individual households engaged in hotel services with a total number of 0.505 million people, that of the catering services were 2.761 million individual households absorbing another 9.048 million people.

Of the total number of corporations in hotel and catering services, the proportion of state-owned, state joint ownership and state sole funded corporations was 14.7 percent, that of the collective, collective joint ownership and Share-holding cooperatives corporations was 18.3 percent, the private enterprises 50.5 percent, enterprises with funds from Hong Kong Macao and Taiwan account for 1.6 percent and 2.1 percent for foreign funded enterprises and others account for 12.8 percent.

Of the total number of employees, the proportion of those in state-owned, state joint ownership and state sole funded corporations accounted for 20.5 percent, state-owned, state joint ownership and state sole funded corporations was 9.9 percent, the private enterprises 38.1 percent, enterprises with funds from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan accounted for 5.5 percent and 7.4 percent for foreign funded enterprises and others account for 18.6 percent (see table 12).

By the end of 2004, the total assets of the corporations engaged in hotel and catering services reached 697.58 billion yuan, the total liabilities amounted to 422.22 billion yuan, the total equity was 275.36 billion yuan. The assets and liability ratio was 60.5 percent, in terms of different trade, that of the hotel service was 61.3 percent and that of the catering service was 58.1 percent (see table 13).

In 2004, the total business revenue generated by principal activities of corporations engaged in hotel and catering services was 164.96 billion yuan, and the gross profits reached 2.75 billion yuan (see table 14).

The business revenue of individual households engaged in hotel and catering services was 24.34 billion yuan, that of those engaged in retail trade was 534.44 billion yuan.

V. Other Sectors in Tertiary Industry

1. Number of Units and Employees

By the end of 2004, there were 2.401million legal person units engaged in other sectors [5] in the tertiary industry with a total employment of 58.528 million people. Of this total, 0.489million were corporations with total employment of 14.123million people; 1.912million were government agencies and institution and non-corporation units with a total employment of 44.405 million people. There were 5.825million individual households engaged in other sectors in the tertiary industry with a total number of 12.018 million people (see table 15).

The assets and liability ratio was 82.2 percent (see table 16).

3. Business Revenue and Gross Profits from Principal Activities

By the end of 2004, the total business revenue generated by principal activities of corporations engaged in other sectors in tertiary industry was 4,447.94 billion yuan, and the gross profits reached 455.01 billion yuan. of the total business revenue, the proportions of that from the financial intermediation, information transmission, computer service and software, leasing and business services were 54.4 percent, 17.1 percent and 15.6 percent respectively or accounting for 87.1 percent of the total. Their proportions in gross profits were 20.0 percent, 36.8 percent and 32.6 percent respectively, or 89.4 percent of the tertiary industry (see table 17).

By the end of 2004, the total assets of government agencies, institutions and other non-corporation legal person units were 14,195.08 billion yuan, the annual revenue was 2,882.70 billion yuan and the annual expenditure was 2,712.92 billion yuan (see table 18).
