The Business Income of National Cultural and Related Industrial Enterprises Above Designated in the First Quarters of 2022

According to the survey of 68,000 cultural and related industrial enterprises above designated size in China, in the first quarter of 2022, the above-mentioned enterprises achieved an operating revenue of 2,697.3 billion yuan, an increase of 5.0 percent over the same period of last year according to comparable standards (see Note 6 for details) [1].

In terms of business types, the 16 industry categories[2] with obvious characteristics of new cultural business types achieved an operating revenue of 940.7 billion yuan, an increase of 6.3 percent over the same period of last year, 1.3 percentage points higher than all cultural and related industrial enterprises above designated size.

By industry category, the operating revenue of news and information services was 318.3 billion yuan, an increase of 6.7 percent over the same period last year; the production of content creation was 591.6 billion yuan, an increase of 10.1 percent; creative design services amounted to 418.6 billion yuan, an increase of 1.0 percent; cultural communication channels reached 315 billion yuan, an increase of 7.9 percent; cultural investment and operation reached 10.5 billion yuan, an increase of 4.4 percent; cultural, entertainment and leisure services were 21.8 billion yuan, down 6.4 percent; cultural auxiliary production and intermediary services amounted to 362.9 billion yuan, an increase of 2.5 percent; the production of cultural equipment was 153 billion yuan, an increase of 8.1 percent; and the production of cultural consumption terminals was 505.7 billion yuan, an increase of 1.6 percent.

By industry type, the operating income of cultural manufacturing industry was 997.3 billion yuan, an increase of 5.9 percent over the same period of last year; cultural wholesale and retail industry reached 454.9 billion yuan, an increase of 5.8 percent; and cultural services totaled 1,245.1 billion yuan, an increase of 4.1 percent.

By field, the operating revenue of the core cultural field[3] was 1,675.8 billion yuan, an increase of 6.4 percent over the same period last year; cultural related fields reached 1,021.5 billion yuan, an increase of 2.9 percent.

In terms of subregions, the eastern region achieved an operating revenue of 2,053 billion yuan, an increase of 4.1 percent over the same period last year; the central region was 386.1 billion yuan, an increase of 12.0 percent; 236.7 billion yuan in the western region, an increase of 3.3 percent; and northeast China reached 21.6 billion yuan, down 0.5 percent.

I. Explanatory Notes

Culture and related industries refer to the collection of production activities that provide cultural products and cultural related products for the public. According to the Classification of Culture and Related Industries (2018), culture and related industries include nine categories: news and information services, content creation and production, creative design services, cultural communication channels, cultural investment and operation, cultural entertainment and leisure services, cultural auxiliary production and intermediary services, cultural equipment production and cultural consumption terminal production.

Business income refers to the sum of "main business income" and "other business income".

II. Statistical Coverage

The statistical scope of cultural and related industries above designated size is industrial enterprises within the industry scope specified in The Classification of Cultural and Related Industries (2018) with an annual main business income of 20 million yuan or more; wholesale enterprises with annual main business income of 20 million yuan or above or retail enterprises with annual main business income of 5 million yuan or above; service enterprises with an annual operating income of 10 million yuan or more, including transportation, warehousing and postal services, information transmission, software and information technology services, water conservancy, environment and public facilities management, the annual operating income of 20 million yuan or above, and residential services, repair and other services, culture, sports and entertainment with annual operating income of 5 million yuan or above.

III. Survey Method

Every quarter, the cultural and related industrial legal entities above designated size shall be identified and summarized according to the data obtained from the comprehensive survey of Industrial enterprises above designated size, wholesale and retail enterprises above designated size and service enterprises above designated size on the national statistical online direct reporting platform.

V. Division on Eastern, Central, Western and Northeastern Regions.

The eastern region includes 10 provinces (cities) including Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Shandong, Guangdong and Hainan; The central region includes six provinces: Shanxi, Anhui, Jiangxi, Henan, Hubei and Hunan; The western region includes 12 provinces (cities and autonomous regions) Inner Mongolia, Guangxi, Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Tibet, Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia and Xinjiang; Northeast China includes 3 provincesLiaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang.

VI. The operating revenue of enterprises in cultural and related industries above designated size in the first quarter of 2022 is different from the previously published data in the first quarter of 2021. The main reasons are: (1) the number of enterprises above designated size has increased or decreased. In the first quarter of 2022, some enterprises reached the standards above designated size and were included in the scope of investigation, some enterprises withdrew from the scope of investigation due to their smaller scale, as well as newly-built and put into operation, bankrupt injection (suspension) and sales enterprises, which changed the number of enterprises above designated size. In the first quarter of 2022, the number of cultural and related industry survey enterprises above designated size nationwide was 68,000, an increase of 4,583 over the same period of last year. According to comparable standards, in the first quarter of 2021, the operating revenue of cultural and related industrial enterprises above designated size in China was 2,568.3 billion yuan. 2 Strengthen statistical law enforcement, clean up the enterprises that do not meet the requirements above designated size and the false data reported in the statistical law enforcement inspection, and correct the relevant base according to regulations.
