Announcement on Total Scale and Value-added Data of National Sports Industry in 2020

According to the calculation, in 2020, the total scale (total output) of the national sports industry was 2,737.2 billion yuan, and the added value was 1,073.5 billion yuan. Compared with 2019, the total output decreased by 7.2 percent (not excluding price factors, the same below), and the added value decreased by 4.6 percent.

 

From the perspective of internal composition, the added value of sports service industry was 737.4 billion yuan, accounting for 68.7 percent of the added value of sports industry, an increase of 1 percentage point over the previous year. The manufacturing added value of sporting goods and related products was 314.4 billion yuan, accounting for 29.3 percent of the added value of the sports industry, a decrease of 1.1 percentage points over the previous year. The added value of sports facilities construction was 21.7 billion yuan, accounting for 2.0 percent of the sports industry, an increase of 0.1 percentage point over the previous year.

 

In terms of growth rate, novel coronavirus pneumonia affected the increase in most sports industry categories. The added value of sports venues and facilities decreased by 20.2 percent. Sports brokers and agents, advertising and exhibitions, performance and design services declined by 16.9 percent, and sports goods and related products decreased by 8.1 percent. The added value of sports service industry dominated by non-contact, aggregation and management activities maintained growth. Among them, the highest growth rate was sports media and information services, with an increase of 18.9 percent, followed by sports education and training, with an increase of 5.7 percent.

Annotations:

 

I. Explanatory Notes

 

The total output of sports industry refers to the value of all sports goods and services produced by all resident units of a country in a certain period of time.

 

The value added of sports industry refers to the added value created by the production activities of sports industry in a certain period of time by all permanent resident units of a country.

 

Resident unit refers to the economic unit with the center of economic interests within the scope of China's economic territory.

 

Production is an activity to create new output of goods and services by using labor, capital and other elements under the responsibility, control and management of institutional units.

 

II. Accounting Classification

 

The accounting classification of sports industry adopts Statistical Classification of Sports Industry (2019), which is a derivative classification of National Economic Industry Classification (GB / T 4754-2017), and it is a re-classification of relevant activities in accordance with the characteristics of sports industry in National Economic Industry Classification (GB / T 4754-2017).

 

Sports industry accounting adopts two-level accounting classification. According to the characteristics of activities, the first level is divided into three categories: sports goods and related products manufacturing, sports facilities construction and sports service. On the basis of the first level classification, the second level classification is subdivided into 178 small categories of national economic industries.

 

III. Accounting Method and Data Source

 

The accounting shall be conducted in accordance with the accounting method for total output and value added of sports industry formulated by the National Bureau of Statistics.

 

The data needed for accounting mainly comes from three parts. First, census data and special survey data, including national economic census data, and national sports industry special survey data, etc.; second, statistical data of National Bureau of Statistics, including national economic accounting data, relevant professional statistical annual report data, etc.; third, administrative management data, such as department statistical data of General Administration of Sport of China.
