Communiqué of the Seventh National Population Census [1] (No. 7)

Urban and Rural Population and Floating Population

Based on the results of the Seventh National Population Census, released as follows are the information about the urban and rural distribution and migration of population in the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government and the servicemen of the Chinese mainland at 00:00 hours of November 1, 2020.

 

I. Urban and Rural [2] Population

 

Among the national population [3], there were 901991162 persons living in urban areas, accounting for 63.89 percent (in 2020, the urbanization rate of household registered population was 45.4 percent [4]); 509787562 persons living in rural areas, accounting for 36.11 percent. Compared with the Sixth National Population Census in 2010, the urban population increased by 236415856 and the rural population decreased by 164361984. The urban population share went up by 14.21 percentage points.

II. Floating Population [5]

 

Of the national population, the number of population who lived in places other than their household registration areas [6] reached 492762506, of which the population who lived in places other than their household registration but still in the same city [7] totaled 116945747 and the floating population 375816759. Of the floating population, the population moving to other provinces reached 124837153 and the population moving within the provinces numbered 250979606.

 

Compared with the Sixth National Population Census in 2010, the population who lived in places other than their household registration areas went up by 231376431, an increase of 88.52 percent; the population who lived in places other than their household registration but still in the same city up by 76986324, an increase of 192.66 percent; and the floating population up by 154390107, an increase of 69.73 percent.

 

Notes:

 

1. All figures in this Communiqué are preliminary results.

 

2. Urban and rural areas are classified based on the Regulation on Classification of Urban and Rural Areas for Statistics issued by the National Bureau of Statistics of China.

 

3. The national population refers to the population of the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government and servicemen of the Chinese mainland, excluding residents of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and foreigners living in the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government.

 

4. The data are from the Ministry of Public Security.

 

5. Floating population refers to the population who live in places other than their household registration excluding those with current residences different from their household registration but still in the same city.

 

6. Population who live in places other than their household registration areas refers to those whose current residences are different from the registered towns or streets and have been away from there for over 6 months.

 

7. Population who live in places other than their household registration but still in the same city refers to those whose current residences are different from the registered towns or streets in the same or different district of the same municipality or prefecture-level city.
