Communiqué of the Seventh National Population Census[1] (No. 3)

Based on the results of the Seventh National Population Census, released as follows are the data of permanent residents[2] in 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government (hereinafter referred to as provinces) of the Chinese mainland at 00:00 hours of November 1, 2020.

 

I. Population by Region

 

Among 31 provinces, there were 2 provinces with a population of more than 100 million, 9 provinces with a population between 50 million and 100 million, 17 provinces with a population between 10 million and 50 million, and 3 provinces with a population less than 10 million. Of which, the population of the top five provinces accounted for 35.09 percent of the national population[3].

 

In terms of regions[4], the population in the eastern region was 563717119, accounting for 39.93 percent; the population in the central areas was 364694362, accounting for 25.83 percent; the population in the western region was 382852295, accounting for 27.12 percent; the population in the northeastern region was 98514948, accounting for 6.98 percent.

II. Regional Population Changes

 

Compared with the results from the Sixth National Population Census in 2010, of the 31 provinces, 25 provinces had an increase in population. The 5 provinces with larger population growth were Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan, an increase of 21709378, 10140697, 6088113, 5734388, and 5341952 persons respectively.

 

In terms of regions, compared with the Sixth National Population Census in 2010, the proportion of the population in the eastern region increased by 2.15 percentage points, that in the central areas decreased by 0.79 percentage point, that in the western region increased by 0.22 percentage point, and that in the northeastern region decreased by 1.20 percentage points.

 

Notes:

 

1. All figures in the Communiqué are preliminary results. Due to the rounding-off reasons, the subentries may not add up to the aggregate totals.

 

2. Permanent Residents include people living in the current town/street where their household registration is located or with their household registration to be settled; people living in the current town/street and leaving the town/street of their household registration for over 6 months; people leaving the town/street of their household registration for less than 6 months or working or studying overseas, with their household registration located in the current town/street.

 

3. The national population refers to the population of the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government and servicemen of the Chinese mainland, excluding residents of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and foreigners living in the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government.

 

4. The eastern region includes 10 provinces (municipalities), namely Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Shandong, Guangdong, and Hainan; the central areas include 6 provinces of Shanxi, Anhui, Jiangxi, Henan, Hubei and Hunan; the western region includes 12 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities), namely Inner Mongolia, Guangxi, Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Tibet, Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia and Xinjiang; the northeastern region includes 3 provinces, namely Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang.

 

5. The national total in this table does not include population of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Macao Special Administrative Region or Taiwan Area.

 

6. It refers to the proportion of permanent residents of 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government to the national population.
