Communiqué of the Seventh National Population Census [1] (No. 2)

Basic Information of the National Population

Based on the results of the Seventh National Population Census, released as follows are the basic information of the national population at 00:00 hours of November 1, 2020.

 

I. Total Population

 

The total population of China [2] was 1443497378 persons, of which:

The population of 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government and the servicemen of the Chinese mainland through census enumeration was 1411778724 persons;

The population of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region [3] was 7474200 persons;

The population of Macao Special Administrative Region [4] was 683218 persons;

The population of Taiwan [5] was 23561236 persons.

 

II. Population Growth

 

Compared with the population of 1339724852 from the Sixth National Population Census in 2010, the national population [6] increased by 72053872 persons, or 5.38 percent. The average annual growth rate was 0.53 percent.

III. Population by Household Types

 

In the country, there were 494157423 family households[7] with 1292809300 persons and 28531842 collective households with 118969424 persons. The average size of family household was 2.62 persons, or 0.48 person less as compared with the 3.10 persons in the Sixth National Population Census in 2010.

 

IV. Population of Ethnic Groups

 

Of the national population, 1286311334 persons or 91.11 percent were of the Han ethnic group and 125467390 persons or 8.89 percent were of ethnic minorities. Compared with the Sixth National Population Census in 2010, the population of the Han ethnic group increased by 60378693 persons, or 4.93 percent; while the population of ethnic minorities increased by 11675179 persons, or 10.26 percent.

1. All figures in the Communiqué are preliminary results.

 

2. The total population of China includes the population of 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government and servicemen of the Chinese mainland and the population of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Macao Special Administrative Region and Taiwan.

 

3. Population of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region refers to data at the end of 2020 provided by Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government.

 

4. Population of Macao Special Administrative Region refers to data at the end of 2020 provided by Macao Special Administrative Region government.

 

5. Population of Taiwan refers to registered population at the end of 2020 released by relevant authorities of Taiwan.

 

6. The national population refers to the population of the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government and servicemen of the Chinese mainland, excluding residents of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and foreigners living in the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government.

 

7. Family households refers to households consisting of persons, bonded by family relations, staying under the same roof and sharing living arrangement.
