Value-added of National Culture and Related Industries in 2019

After accounting, the added value of national culture and related industries in 2019 was 4,436.3 billion yuan, an increase of 7.8 percent over the previous year (not excluding price factors), accounting for 4.5 percent of GDP, an increase of 0.02 percentage point over the previous year.

 

By industry, in 2019, the added value of cultural service industry was 2,812.1 billion yuan, accounting for 63.4 percent of the added value of cultural and related industries, 3.1 percentage points higher than that of the previous year; the added value of cultural manufacturing industry was 1,189.9 billion yuan, accounting for 26.8 percent, 2.3 percentage points lower than that of the previous year; the added value of cultural wholesale and retail industry was 434.2 billion yuan, accounting for 9.8 percent, 0.8 percentage point lower than that of the previous year.

 

According to the nature of the activities, the added value created by the core cultural field was 3,075.7 billion yuan, accounting for 69.3 percent of the added value of culture and related industries, an increase of 2.5 percentage points over the previous year. Among them, the proportion of cultural communication channels increased the most, accounting for 11.9 percent, an increase of 3.7 percentage points over the previous year. The added value of cultural related fields was 1,360.5 billion yuan, accounting for 30.7 percent, 2.5 percentage points lower than that of the previous year.

Annotations:

 

I. Explanatory Notes

 

Culture and related industries refer to the collection of production activities that provide cultural products and cultural related products for the public.

 

The value added of culture and related industries refers to the added value created by the production activities of culture and related industries in a certain period of time by all permanent resident units in a country.

 

The term "resident unit" refers to an economic unit with a center of economic interests in China's economic territory.

 

Production refers to the activities of creating new output of goods and services by using labor, capital, goods and services input under the control and organization of institutional units.

 

II. Accounting Scope and Classification

 

The accounting scope of value added of culture and related industries includes all culture and related activities specified in Classification of Culture and Related Industries (2018).

 

According to industry categories, culture and related industries are divided into cultural manufacturing industry, cultural wholesale and retail industry and cultural service industry. According to the nature of activities, culture and related industries are divided into two parts: one is the "cultural core area", which refers to the production activities of cultural products (including goods and services) such as creation, manufacturing, dissemination and display, which take culture as the core content and directly meet people's spiritual needs; the other is the "cultural related area", which refers to the activities for realizing the  production of cultural products, such as cultural auxiliary production and intermediary services, cultural equipment production and cultural consumption terminal production (including manufacturing and sales).

 

III. Accounting Method and Data Source

 

The added value of culture and related industries is calculated according to the income method, and the data required for accounting are from the national economic census data, national economic accounting data, statistical data of culture and related industries, etc.
