Value-added of National Culture and Related Industries in 2018

After accounting, in 2018, the value added of national culture and related industries was 4,117.1 billion-yuan, accounting for 4.48 percent of GDP, an increase of 0.22 percentage point over the previous year [1].

 

By industry category, in 2018, the value added of cultural manufacturing industry was 1,199.9 billion-yuan, accounting for 29.1 percent of the added value of cultural and related industries; the value added of cultural wholesale and retail industry was 434 billion-yuan, accounting for 10.6 percent; that of cultural service industry was 2,483.2 billion-yuan, accounting for 60.3 percent.

 

 

According to the nature of activities, the value added created by cultural core areas was 2,752.2 billion-yuan, accounting for 66.8 percent of the added value of cultural and related industries; the value added created by cultural related areas was 1,364.9 billion-yuan, accounting for 33.2 percent.

I. Explanatory Notes

 

Culture and related industries refer to the collection of production activities that provide cultural products and cultural related products for the public.

 

The value added of culture and related industries refers to the added value created by the production activities of culture and related industries in a certain period of time by all permanent resident units in a country. The term "resident unit" refers to an economic unit with a center of economic interests in China's economic territory. Production refers to the activities of creating new output of goods and services by using labor, capital, goods and services input under the control and organization of institutional units.

 

II. Accounting Scope and Classification

 

The accounting scope of value added of culture and related industries includes all culture and related activities specified in Classification of Culture and Related Industries (2018).

 

According to industry categories, culture and related industries are divided into cultural manufacturing industry, cultural wholesale and retail industry and cultural service industry. According to the nature of activities, culture and related industries are divided into two parts: one is the "cultural core area", which refers to the production activities of cultural products (including goods and services) such as creation, manufacturing, dissemination and display, which take culture as the core content and directly meet people's spiritual needs; the other is the "cultural related area", which refers to the activities for realizing the  production of cultural products, such as cultural auxiliary production and intermediary services, cultural equipment production and cultural consumption terminal production (including manufacturing and sales).

 

III. Accounting Method and Data Source

 

The value added of culture and related industries shall be calculated by income method in accordance with the Accounting Method for Value-added of Culture and Related Industries formulated by the National Bureau of Statistics, using basic data such as national economic census data, national economic accounting data, culture and related industry statistics data, etc.
