The Third National Economic Census

Based on the results of the Third National Economic Census, the major data of the tertiary industry are disseminated as the following:

 

I. Wholesale and Retail Trade

 

1. Number of Corporate Enterprises and Persons Employed

 

At the end of 2013, there were 2.811 million corporate enterprises engaged in wholesale and retail trade with total number of 33.149 million persons employed, up by 100.4 percent and 75.3 percent respectively as compared with those at the end of 2008.

 

Of the total number of corporate enterprises in wholesale and retail trade, wholesale accounted for 62.1 percent and retail trade accounted for 37.9 percent. Of the total number of persons employed, wholesale accounted for 58 percent and retail trade accounted for 42 percent. (Table 3-1)

Of the total number of corporate enterprises in wholesale and retail trade, domestic-funded enterprises accounted for 98.8 percent, enterprises with funds from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan accounted for 0.5 percent, and foreign funded enterprises accounted for 0.7 percent. In terms of domestic-funded enterprises, state-owned enterprises accounted for 1 percent of the total number of corporate enterprises, share-holding corporations 1.1 percent, limited liability corporations 17.4 percent and private enterprises 70.1 percent.

 

Of the total number of persons employed, those in domestic-funded enterprises accounted for 94.1 percent, those in enterprises with funds from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 2.7 percent, and those in foreign-funded enterprises 3.2 percent. (Table 3-2)

2. Total Assets

 

At the end of 2013, the total amount of assets of the corporate enterprises engaged in wholesale and retail trade reached 34.2 trillion yuan, an increase of 181.5 percent as compared with that at the end of 2008. Of the total, the assets of corporate enterprises in wholesale was 27 trillion yuan, and that of corporate enterprises in retail trade was 7.2 trillion yuan, up by 181.1 percent and 182.9 percent respectively over the end of 2008. II. Transportation, Storage and Post

 

1. Number of Corporate Enterprises and Persons Employed

 

At the end of 2013, there were 252 thousand corporate enterprises and 12.47 million persons employed in the transportation, storage and post industries, up by 61.1 percent and 25.7 percent respectively as compared with those at the end of 2008.

 

Of the total number of corporate enterprises engaged in transportation, storage and post, the domestic-funded enterprises accounted for 98.2 percent, enterprises with funds from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 1 percent, and foreign-funded enterprises for 0.8 percent.

 

Of the total number of persons employed, the proportion of those in domestic-funded enterprises was 95.8 percent, those in enterprises with funds from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 2.4 percent and those in foreign-funded enterprises 1.8 percent. (Table 3-4)

At the end of 2013, the total amount of assets of the corporate enterprises engaged in transportation, storage and post reached 18,869.07 billion yuan, up by 151.7 percent over the end of 2008. (Table 3-5)

III. Hotels and Catering Services

 

1. Number of Corporate Enterprises and Persons Employed

 

At the end of 2013, there were 200 thousand corporate enterprises engaged in hotels and catering services with total number of 6.916 million persons employed, up by 37.6 percent and 18.2 percent respectively as compared with those at the end of 2008.

 

Of the total number of corporate enterprises in hotels and catering services, hotels accounted for 36.8 percent and catering services accounted for 63.2 percent. Of the total number of persons employed, 42.6 percent worked in hotels and 57.4 percent in catering services. (Table 3-6)

Of the total number of corporate enterprises in hotels and catering services, domestic-funded enterprises accounted for 97.8 percent, enterprises with funds from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 1.1 percent and foreign-funded enterprises 1.1 percent. In terms of domestic-funded enterprises, state-owned enterprises accounted for 3.3 percent of the total number of corporate enterprises, share-holding corporations 1.5 percent, limited liability corporations 16.6 percent and private enterprises 67.2 percent.

 

Among the total number of persons employed, the proportion of those in domestic-funded enterprises was 87.5 percent, that in enterprises with funds from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 5 percent and foreign-funded enterprises 7.5 percent.  (Table 3-7)

2. Total Assets

 

At the end of 2013, the total amount of assets of the corporate enterprises engaged in hotels and catering services reached 2,046.26 billion yuan, an increase of 84.7 percent as compared with that at the end of 2008. Of this total, the total assets of hotels was 1,374.59 billion yuan and that of catering services was 671.67 billion yuan, up by 74.5 percent and 109.8 percent respectively over the end of 2008. (Table 3-8)

IV.Information Transmission, Software and Information Technology Services

 

1. Number of Corporate Enterprises and Persons Employed

 

At the end of 2013, there were 219 thousand corporate enterprises engaged in information transmission, software and information technology services with a total number of 5.394 million persons employed, up by 47.6 percent and 43.3 percent respectively as compared with those at the end of 2008.

 

Of the total number of corporate enterprises engaged in information transmission, software and information technology services, the proportion of domestic-funded enterprises was 96.3 percent, enterprises with funds from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 1.4 percent and foreign-funded enterprises 2.3 percent.

 

Of the total number of persons employed, the proportion of those in domestic-funded enterprises was 79.9 percent, that in enterprises with funds from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 8.9 percent and in foreign-funded enterprises 11.2 percent. (Table 3-9)

At the end of 2013, the total amount of assets of the corporate enterprises engaged in information transmission, software and information technology services reached 7,777.46 billion yuan, up by 124 percent as compared with that at the end of 2008. (Table 3-10)

V. Financial Intermediation

At the end of 2013, there were 29 thousand corporate enterprises engaged in financial intermediation with a total number of 5.139 million persons employed, up by 8.4 percent and 4.1 percent respectively as compared with those at the end of 2008 (see Table 3-11).

VI. Real Estate

 

1. Number of Corporate Enterprises and Persons Employed

 

At the end of 2013, there were 338 thousand corporate enterprises engaged in real estate sector in China, an increase of 54.4 percent as compared with that at the end of 2008. Of this total, the number of enterprises for real estate development and management was 132 thousand, that of property management 105 thousand and real estate intermediary services 66 thousand, up by 50.3 percent, 70.8 percent and 82.3 percent respectively as compared with those at the end of 2008.

 

At the end of 2013, there were 8.772 million persons employed by the corporate enterprises in the real estate sector, up by 47.5 percent as compared with that at the end of 2008. Of this total, the number of persons employed in real estate development and management was 3.35 million, that in property management 4.116 million, and that in real estate intermediary services 776 thousand, up by 61.3 percent, 43.2 percent and 84 percent respectively over the end of 2008. 2. Total Assets

 

At the end of 2013, the total amount of assets of the corporate enterprises engaged in real estate sector reached 52,588.92 billion yuan, an increase of 220.4 percent as compared with that at the end of 2008. Of the total, the assets of enterprises for real estate development and management was 47,456.74 billion yuan, that of property management 1,366.77 billion yuan, and real estate intermediary services 548.95 billion yuan, up by 227.6 percent, 119 percent and 160 percent respectively as compared with that at the end of 2008. (Table 3-14)

VII. Leasing and Business Services

 

1. Number of Corporate Enterprises and Persons Employed

 

At the end of 2013, there were 815 thousand corporate enterprises engaged in leasing and business services with total employment of 12.16 million people, up by 113.9 percent and 47.9 percent respectively as compared with those at the end of 2008.

 

Of the total number of corporate enterprises engaged in leasing and business services, the proportion of domestic-funded enterprises was 98.4 percent, enterprises with funds from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 0.7 percent and foreign-funded enterprises 0.9 percent.

 

Of the total number of persons employed, the proportion of those in domestic-funded enterprises was 95.5 percent, that in enterprises with funds from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 1.9 percent and in foreign-funded enterprises 2.6 percent. (Table 3-15)

2. Total Assets

 

At the end of 2013, the total amount of assets of the corporate enterprises engaged in leasing and business services reached 53,967.82 billion yuan, up by 178.3 percent as compared with that at the end of 2008.

 

VIII. Scientific Research and Technical Services

 

1. Number of Corporate Enterprises and Persons Employed

 

At the end of 2013, there were 345 thousand corporate enterprises engaged in scientific research and technical services with a total number of 6.033 million persons employed, up by 154.8 percent and 97.4 percent respectively as compared with those at the end of 2008.

 

Of the total number of corporate enterprises engaged in scientific research and technical services, the proportion of domestic-funded enterprises was 98.1 percent, enterprises with funds from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 0.7 percent and foreign-funded enterprises1.2 percent.

 

Of the total number of employees, the proportion of those in domestic-funded enterprises was 95.6 percent, that in enterprises with funds from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 1.9 percent and foreign-funded enterprises 2.5 percent. (Table 3-16)

IX. Household Services, Maintenance and Other Services

 

1. Number of Corporate Enterprises and Persons Employed

 

At the end of 2013, there were 175 thousand corporate enterprises engaged in household services, maintenance and other services with a total number of 2.669 million persons employed, up by 36.4 percent and 21.6 percent respectively as compared with those at the end of 2008.

 

Of the total number of corporate enterprises engaged in household services, maintenance and other services, the proportion of domestic-funded enterprises was 99.3 percent, enterprises with funds from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 0.3 percent and foreign-funded enterprises 0.4 percent.

 

Of the total number of persons employed, the proportion of those in domestic-funded enterprises was 96.4 percent, that in enterprises with funds from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 2.2 percent and in foreign-funded enterprises 1.4 percent. (Table 3-18)

2. Total Assets

 

At the end of 2013, the total amount of assets of the corporate enterprises engaged in household services, maintenance and other services reached 793.32 billion yuan, up by 133.9 percent as compared with that at the end of 2008. (Table 3-19)

X. Management of Water Conservancy, Environment and Public Facilities

 

1. Number of Legal Entities and Persons Employed

 

At the end of 2013, there were 85 thousand legal entities engaged in management of water conservancy, environment and public facilities, of which 39 thousand were government agencies, institutions and non-corporate enterprises. Of this total 2.981 million persons employed in management of water conservancy, environment and public facilities, and 1.689 million were from government agencies, institutions and non-corporate enterprises.

 

2. Assets

 

At the end of 2013, the total amount of assets of the corporate enterprises engaged in management of water conservancy, environment and public facilities reached 3,399.79 billion yuan, and that of government agencies, institutions and non-corporate enterprises was 787.95 billion yuan.

 

XI. Education

 

1. Number of Legal Entities and Persons Employed

 

At the end of 2013, there were 414 thousand legal entities engaged in education, of which, 360 thousand were government agencies, institutions and non-corporate enterprises. Of the total 19.138 million persons employed in education, and 17.956 million were from government agencies, institutions and non-corporate enterprises.

 

2. Assets

 

At the end of 2013, the total amount of assets of the corporate enterprises engaged in education reached 309.67 billion yuan, and that of government agencies, institutions and non-corporate enterprises 5,101 billion yuan.

 

XII. Health and Social Work

 

1. Number of Legal Entities and Persons Employed

 

At the end of 2013, there were 250 thousand legal entities engaged in health and social work, of which 219 thousand were government agencies, institutions and non-corporate enterprises. Of the total 9.177 million persons employed in health and social work, and 8.076 million were from government agencies, institutions and non-corporate enterprises.

At the end of 2013, the total amount of assets of the corporate enterprises engaged in health and social work reached 356.24 billion yuan, and that of government agencies, institutions and non-corporate enterprises 2,909.92 billion yuan.

 

XIII. Culture, Sports and Entertainment

 

1. Number of Legal Entities and Persons Employed

 

At the end of 2013, there were 230 thousand legal entities engaged in culture, sports and entertainment, of which, 57 thousand were government agencies, institutions and non-corporate enterprises. Of the total 3.09 million persons employed in culture, sports and entertainment, and 1.144 million were from government agencies, institutions and non-corporate enterprises.

 

2. Assets

 

At the end of 2013, the total amount of assets of the corporate enterprises engaged in culture, sports and entertainment reached 1,512.51 billion yuan, and that of government agencies, institutions and non-corporate enterprises 688.85 billion yuan.

 

XIV. Public Management, Social Security and Social Organization

 

At the end of 2013, there were 1.52 million legal entities engaged in public management, social security and social organization, of which 1.512 million were government agencies, institutions and non-corporate enterprises. Of the total 27.096 million persons employed in public management, social security and social organization, and 26.935 million were from government agencies, institutions and non-corporate enterprises.
