Communiqué on Major Data of 1% National Population Sample Survey in 2005

Approved by the State Council, China carried out 1% National Population Sample Survey at the end of 2005. With the whole country as the population, and provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities as the sub-population, the sampling method of stratified, multi-stage, cluster, and probability proportioned to size was adopted in the survey. The final sample was enumeration district. The sample size was 17.05 million persons, accounted by 1.31% of the total population of China. Under the consolidated guidance of the State Council and local governments at all levels, and through the hard work of all the enumerators, the survey task has been basically completed. The major data of the total population and its composition through rapid aggregation is now released as follows:

I. Total Population

At the time point of zero hour of November 1, 2005, the total population of China was 1306.28 million persons which included 31 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities, and active duty soldiers, increased by 40.45 million persons and 3.2 percent as compared with the total population of 1265.83 million persons in the Fifth National Population Census, which the time reference was 0:00 a.m. November 1, 2000. The average annual increases were 8.09 million persons, and annual increase rate was 0.63 percent. According to the survey results, the estimated total population at the end of 2005 was 1307.56 million persons.

II. Floating Population

The floating population was 147.35 million persons out of the total population of China; wherein, the inter-provincial floating population is 47.79 million persons. An increase of 2.96 million persons of floating population, and 5.37 million persons of inter-provincial floating population as compared with that in the Fifth National Population Census.

III. Urban-Rural Composition

The urban population was 561.57 million persons, occupied 42.99% of the overall population; the rural population was 744.71 million persons, occupied 57.01% of the overall population. As compared with that in No. 5th National Population Census, the proportion of rural population to overall population was up by 6.77 percentage points.

IV. Gender Composition

Of the total population, there were 673.09 million males, accounted for 51.53 percent, and 633.19 million females, taken a share of 48.47 percent. The sex ratio was 106.30 ( the female =100, the male to female’s ratio), down by 0.44 percentage points as compared with that in the Fifth National Population Census.

V. Age Composition

The population aged from 0 to 14 was 264.78 million persons, taken a proportion of 20.27 percent; the population aged from 15 to 59 was 897.42 million persons, proportioned 68.70; the population aged above 60 was 144.08 million persons (wherein, the population aged 65 and above was 100.45 million persons, occupied 7.69% of the overall population), shared 11.03 percent.. As compared with that in Fifth National Population Census, the population aged from 0 to14 was down by 2.62 percentage points, the population aged 60 and above was up by 0.76 percentage points (wherein, the population aged at 65 and above was up by 0.73 percentage points).

VI. Nationality Composition

The population of Han nationality was 1182.95 million persons, shared 90.56 percent to the total population; that of other minorities was 123.33 million persons, a share of 9.44 percent to the total population. As compared with that in the Fifth National Population Census, the Han nationality was up by 23.55 million persons, a rise of 2.03 percent; the other minorities was up by 16.90 million persons, a rise of 15.88 percent.

VII. Educational Level

Of the total population, the population of college level (referring to college and above) was 67.64 million persons; that of senior middle school level (included technical secondary school) was 150.83 million persons; that of junior middle school level was 467.35 million persons; and that of primary school level was 407.06 million persons. As compared with that in Fifth National Population Census, the population of college level increased by 21.93 million persons; that of the senior middle school level increased by 9.74 million persons; the junior middle school level increased by 37.46 million persons; and that of primary school level decreased by 44.85 million persons (The above mentioned different educational level of population included all kinds of graduates, undergraduates, and in-school students).

VIII. Household Population

There were 395.19 million households in China, and the household population was 1236.94 million persons, and the average family size was 3.13 persons; the population of collective residence was 69.34 million persons. As compared with that in Fifth National Population Census, the average family size was decreased by 0.31 persons. The average family size of urban areas was 2.97 persons, while that of rural areas was 3.27 persons.

 

Note:

1. The figures in the Communiqué were the preliminary estimates based on the result of sample survey.

2. The time reference of the survey was 0:00 a.m. November 1, 2005. The survey targets were the population having permanent residence, possessing Chinese nationality and living in the mainland of the People's Republic of China.

3. The national total population did not include the population of Hong Kong SAR, Marco SAR, and Taiwan province.

4. According to the post enumeration survey, the net omission rate of the total population was 1.72 percent. The total population has been included this part of omission population.
