Mr. Ma Jiantang Participated in the Opening Ceremony of 59th ISI World Statistics Congress and Delivered a Speech

The 59th ISI World Statistics Congress (WSC) was held in Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center (HKCEC) on 25-30 August. Mr. Ma Jiantang, Commissioner of NBS, participated in the opening ceremony and made a speech.

 

On behalf of the NBS, Mr. Ma Jiantang extended warn congratulations to the opening of the Congress, and sincere welcome to the experts and scholars participating the congress, and sincere thanks to the Hong Kong SAR Government for its strong supports to the organization of the Congress and to the Department of Census and Statistics of HKSAR and its staff for their diligent efforts to the Congress.

Mr. Ma Jiantang pointed out that, nowadays, the world has entered a rapidly changing information age. Statistics, as a science of collecting and analyzing data, researching the quantitative performance and changing rules of things, and forecasting the trends of things, are showing unprecedented value. Based on statistical theory and other related theories, governmental statistics has increasingly become an important foundation in recognizing the economic and social operating rules, promoting national sustainable development, and enhancing exchanges and cooperation.

Mr. Ma Jiantang said that, the “YOUTH” was chosen as the theme of the 59th WSC. The youth, the leaders of the future generations, are most vibrant, most dynamic, and most innovative spirit. The future belongs to young people, The innovation and development of statistics are also counting on the young people, and the Congress is looking forward to seeing them to rejuvenate splendors in the statistical world.

Mr. Ma Jiantang pointed out that, with the rapid development of modern information technology, the traditional statistical knowledge, theories, techniques, methods, and etc. were undergoing among the major changes, major leaps, and large-scale development, the governmental statistics was also facing the good opportunities , and as well as great challenges. The coming of big data era, widely use of the Internet of Things technology and remote sensing, geographic information systems, global positioning systems and other spatial information technology, on one hand, the data sources of the governmental statistics were greatly enriched, which are very helpful to the government statistical work; on the other hand, it put forward new requirements to ideas, data sources and production mode of governmental statistics.

Mr. Ma Jiantang stressed that, the extensive international statistical cooperation and exchanges are helpful to the prosperity of statistical science, the dissemination of advanced statistical ideas and methods, and the improving of statistical capacity and level of all national governments, and the deepening of the statistical application in economic and social development.

Prof. K C Chan, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, HKSAR, Prof. Jae Chang Lee, President, International Statistical Institute, Mrs Lily Ou-Yang, Commissioner for Census and Statistics, HKSAR, gave speeches at the opening ceremony.

Messrs. Xie Hongguang, Deputy Commissioner of NBS, Xian Zude, Chief Statistician of NBS, as well as more than 2,500 statisticians, experts, scholars, entrepreneurs and government officials from all over the world, attended the opening ceremony.
