Brief Introduction

I. Main Contents and Statistical Scopes

The data in this chapter show comprehensively the production results in agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, fishery, as well as conditions of agricultural production, including output value of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery, output of major products, quantity of agricultural machinery, facilities of water conservancy and efforts to eliminate water-logging and combat alkalinity, basic conditions of state-owned farms.

Statistics on agriculture cover all rural households engaged in production and operation, organizations for agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, fishery of all types of economic organization and their branches; organizations engaged in agricultural production activities belonging to non-agricultural industry in each province, autonomous region, municipality, Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps; and all crop land, farms, pastures. Agricultural production activities undertaken by agriculture research institutions are not included.

II. Data Sources and Survey Methods

(1) Data on output value of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery are provided by the Department of Rural Social and Economic Survey of the NBS using data from the Statistical Reporting System on Agricultural Output and Price.

(2) Data on production of agriculture, animal husbandry and the agricultural production conditions are provided by the Department of Rural Social and Economic Survey of the NBS using data from the Statistical Reporting System on Agriculture, Forestry, Animal Husbandry and Fishery. Data on major farm crops such as rice, wheat, corn are collected through sample surveys and measurement by remote sensing technology. Data on animal husbandry such as hog, cattle, sheep and poultry are collected from sample surveys. Data on conditions of agricultural production, and on other farm crops, garden crops, and other poultry are collected from comprehensive reporting system by using statistical reporting forms.

(3) Data on the basic conditions of forestry and fishery production come from statistical reports tabulated by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration and by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, with survey methods decided by them respectively.

(4) Data on the basic conditions of the state-owned farms come from the statistical reports tabulated by the Bureau of Reclamation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. The statistical scope covers 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government. Data are collected from the grassroots units in accordance with the statistical reporting scheme whereby reporting is done level by level for aggregation.

(5) Data on irrigation and reservoirs, data on efforts to eliminate water-logging, to prevent floods by water control and to combat alkalinity as well as data on the facilities of water conservancy and the area of water-logging eliminated and the improved area of saline-alkaline land come mainly from statistical reports of the Ministry of Water Resources, which covers 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government. Data are collected from individual counties in accordance with the statistical reporting system and are tabulated and reported level by level. Data on some special indicators, such as the number of irrigated areas, large reservoirs and the medium-sized and small reservoirs that cut across regions are collected and reported directly by the higher departments.

¢ó. Notes on Use of Data
