Explanatory Notes on Main Statistical Indicators

 



Cultural Institutions refer to units which have their own organizational system and independent accounting system and specialize in cultural work or service cultural work. They do not include other establishments run by these units with separate accounting system and amateur cultural groups established by various departments. The statistics reflect the scale and level of development of institutions engaged in cultural undertakings.

Art Troupes refer to the troupes which are engaged in drama, opera, music, dance, acrobatics or other art performance, have independent accounts with banks and have self-supporting accounting system. Troupes which are engaged partly in industrial or agricultural activities, partly in art performance and the professional troupes organized by the mass are not included. The statistics reflect the scale and level of development of professional art troupes nationally.

Number of Audience at Art Performance refers to the number of spectators at commercial shows, privately organized shows or free shows given in ethnic minority areas, and does not include the number of spectators at rehearsals and internal viewings. This indicator mainly reflects the scale and effects of viewing of performances given by professional art troupes across the country.

Health Care Institutions include: medical institutions, disease prevention and control centres (epidemic prevention stations), blood gathering and supplying institutions, health supervision and inspection (check up) institutions, medicinal scientific research and on-job training institutions, health education centres and so on.

Medical Organizations include: hospitals, health service centres (stations) in communities, sanatoria, health centres, out-patient clinics, clinics (health stations and infirmaries), maternity and child care agencies (centres and stations), special disease prevention and curing agencies (centres and stations), first aid centres (stations) and clinical inspection centres. Medical organizations are grouped by two types: profit-making and non-profit-making medical organizations.

Hospitals include: polyclinics, traditional Chinese medical hospitals, hospitals integrating traditional Chinese therapeutics and western therapeutics, ethnic hospitals, various specialist hospitals and nursing homes.

Medical Technical Personnel refers to doctors, nurses, pharmacists and laboratory technicians working in medical institutions.

Doctors refer to certified physicians and certified assistant physicians with certifications working in medical and health care and prevention agencies.

Total Cost of Health Services reflects the total expenditure on medical and health care services for the whole country, calculated on the basis of sources of funding. Health expenditure from government budget refers to budgetary allocation for health undertakings by governments at all levels. Social health expenditure refers to non-government budgetary capital input, mainly referring to health insurance. It includes expenditure on health institutions run by enterprises and rural collective entities; expenditure on medical and health care of employees of enterprises; and health expenditure of government employees in excess of that could be covered by the government health care system but borne by government units. Health expenditure of individuals refers to expenditure on health service and health insurance paid by residents from their disposable income.
