Preface
I. China Statistical Yearbook
2006 is an annual statistics publication, which covers very comprehensive
data in 2005 and some selected data series in historically important years and
the most recent twenty years at national level and local levels of province,
autonomous region, and municipality directly under the central government and
therefore, reflects various aspects of China social and economic development.
II. The yearbook contains the
following twenty-five chapters, l. Divisions of Administrative Areas and
Natural Resources; 2. General Survey; 3. National Accounts; 4. Population; 5.
Employment and Wages; 6. Investment in Fixed Assets; 7. Energy; 8. Government

III. The national data in this
book do not include that of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Macao
Special Administrative Region and
IV. Statistics of Hong Kong
Special Administrative Region and Macao Special Administrative Region
constitute an integral part of the national statistics of
V. Compared with the China Statistical
Yearbook 2005, some changes are made in contents and in editing mode,
including the following:
1) In chapters on General Survey and
People抯
Livelihood, data are classified into eastern region, central region, western
region and northeastern region, which cover following provinces:

Western region: Inner Mongolia, Guangxi,
Northeastern region:
2) In the chapter on Population,
data from the annual survey on change of population are substituted by data
from the National Sample Survey on 1% of Population conducted in 2005.
Information on population by urban and rural residence and by province is added
for the first time.
3) Results of the First National
Economic Census bring new data into the Yearbook, including gross domestic
product by industry, and major industrial statistics of the society by type of
ownership and by industry for the year 2004. At the same time, the 2004
statistics compiled on the basis of preliminary reports for manufacturing
industry, construction, investment in real estate development, wholesale and
retail trades have been recompiled for normal annual statistics.
VI. The units of measurement used
in this yearbook are internationally standard measurement units.
VII. Statistical discrepancies
due to rounding are not adjusted in the yearbook.
VIII. If a table in the yearbook
occupies more than one page, the footnotes pertaining to the table are placed
at the end of the last page.
IX. Notations used in the
yearbook:
(blank space) indicates that the figure is not large enough to be measured with the smallest unit in the table, or data are unknown or are not available; “#” indicates a major breakdown of the total; and “*”or “①”indicates footnotes at the end of the table.
