Other Social Activities and Environment Protection

Data in this chapter show statistics on participation in social activities, public security, procuratorial, legal and judicial affairs, civil affairs, labor protection, environment protection and disabled population.

I. Data on participation cover mainly information on representatives to the National People's Congress (NPC), members of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and trade unions, which are provided by NPC, CPPCC and All-China Federation of Trade Unions.

II. Data on public security, procuratorial, legal and judicial affairs are provided by the Ministry of Public Security, the Supreme People's Procuratorate, the Supreme People's Court and the Ministry of Justice. They cover information such as criminal cases registered and offense cases handled by the public security agencies, traffic or fire accidents, cases handled by procurator's offices, cases accepted and settled by the people's courts, and statistics on lawyers, notarization and mediation.

III. Data on civil affairs and labor protection are provided by the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the Ministry of Labor and Social Security. They cover information such as institutions and personnel, budget, social welfare relief, urban welfare facilities, rural network of social security, marriage registration, retirement pensions, arbitration of labor disputes, etc..

IV. Data on environment protection are provided by the State Environment Protection Administration. They cover the following:

(1) The discharge and treatment of waste water, waste gas and solid wastes: The summary data are tabulated from the data of industrial enterprises at county and higher levels, which discharge pollutants. They show the discharge and treatment of waste water, waste gas and solid wastes in various regions and various industrial sectors.

(2) The protection of environment: The data show the incidence of pollution of environment and the development of environment protection zones in various regions.

(3) The improvement of the departments of environment protection: The data show the basic conditions of the local departments of environment protection, excluding the data on the State Environment Protection Administration and its directly subordinate units as well as the departments under State Council.

V. Data on disabled persons are provided by the All-China Federation of Disabled Persons, covering information on the rehabilitation, education, employment and poverty alleviation of disabled persons and institutions serving the needs of disabled persons.

VI. Indicators from the Survey on the Social Status of Chinese Women in 2000 present selected results from the survey on time use, employment and health care.

Data from the Ministry of Public Security, the Supreme People Procuratorate, the Supreme People's Court and the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Civil Affairs, the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, the State Environment Protection Administration, All-China Federation of Trade Unions and All-China Federation of Disabled Persons are collected and tabulated in accordance with the regular statistical reporting systems of the departments concerned. Survey on the Social Status of Chinese Women in 2000 is a survey jointly conducted by the All-China Federation of Women and the National Bureau of Statistics.
