Announcement on the Value-added Data of National Patent-Intensive Industries in 2023

Based on the findings of China's Fifth National Economic Census, the value added of patent-intensive industries nationwide in 2023 has been revised to 16.8713 trillion yuan, accounting for 13.04 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP), an increase of 0.44 percentage point from the previous year[1].

A closer look at the internal structure reveals that the new equipment manufacturing industry, with a value added of 4.8808 trillion yuan, contributed the largest proportion, accounting for 28.9 percent of the total value added of all patent-intensive industries; the industry of information and communication technology for services secured 3.9322 trillion yuan in value added, accounting for 23.3 percent; the industry of information and communication technology for manufacturing secured 3.2101 trillion yuan in value added, accounting for 19.0 percent.

1. Explanatory Notes

Patent-intensive industries refer to clusters of industries whose invention patents meet specified standards in both concentration and scale. These industries leverage intellectual properties to compete in the market and align with the principles of innovation-driven development.

The value added of patent-intensive industries refers to the value added created by the production activities conducted by all resident units engaged in patent-intensive industries in China within a specific period.

Resident units refer to economic units that have their center of economic interests within the economic territory of China.

Production refers to the activity of creating new output of goods and services by using factors such as labor and capital under the control and management of institutional units responsible for it.

2. Accounting Classification

The accounting classification of patent-intensive industries is based on the Statistical Classification of Intellectual Property (Patent) Intensive Industries (2019), and adopts two-tiered classification. According to the nature of economic activities, the first tier classification includes seven categories: the industry of information and communication technology for manufacturing, the industry of information and communication technology for services, new equipment manufacturing industry, new materials manufacturing industry, pharmaceutical and medical industry, environmental protection industry, and R&D, design and technology service industry. On the basis of the first tier classification, the second tier classification further includes 188 sub-categories of national economic industries.

3. Accounting Method and Data Source

The value added of patent-intensive industries is calculated using the income approach. The basic data required for accounting are mainly sourced from the data of national economic census, relevant statistics on the certain field and national economic accounting of the NBS of China.
