Brief Introduction

I. Data in this chapter show the general situation and the development of the construction in China. They cover mainly the situation of production and management of the enterprises of construction, including the number of employed persons, gross output value and value added of construction, floor space of the buildings, machinery and equipment, assets and liabilities, total revenue of enterprises, profits and taxes, labour productivity, percentage of high quality projects, per capita machinery, consumption of construction materials, etc. They also cover the situation of prospecting and designing institutions and the personnel as well as the main indicators of the rural construction teams.

II. Data on the enterprises of construction in this chapter are provided by the Department of Statistics of Investment in Fixed Assets, NBS. in line with the actual situation of the development of construction, the coverage of construction statistics has been enlarged since 1996 when the annual statistical reports were submitted. the original coverage includes all the construction enterprises of various types of ownership at and above town level. the new coverage includes all the construction enterprises of various types of ownership with qualification criteria at or above Class 8. in order to reflect the operation of construction enterprises of the whole society, 1996 and 1997 data of rural construction teams in table 14-1 are adjusted as township and village construction teams with qualification criteria below Class 4. the data on prospecting and designing institutions and the personnel are provided by the Department of Prospecting and Designing, Ministry of Construction. Data on township and village construction teams with qualification criteria below Class 4 are provided by the Bureau of Township Enterprises, Ministry of Agriculture. the annual data are collected in accordance with the “ reporting scheme of construction statistics” stipulated by the National Bureau of Statistics, the “ prospecting and designing statistical reporting scheme” stipulated by the Ministry of Construction and the “ township enterprises statistical reporting scheme” stipulated by the Ministry of Agriculture. 
