China conducted the 6th national population census with zero hour of November 1, 2010 as the reference time. Under the correct leadership of the Central Committee of CPC and the State Council, with the strong support of relevant ministries and local governments, through the painstaking effort of close to 10 million census workers and the active participation of 1.3 billion people of all nationalities, the census was successful in producing rich information on the population. Computerized data sheets have been edited and published to meet the need of the whole society.

Following explanations are given to facilitate the use of this publication.

.The 2010 population census covers all natural persons residing in the territory of the People¡¯s Republic of China and the Chinese citizens residing outside but not permanently settled down in locations beyond the territory of the People¡¯s Republic of China at the census reference time, excluding residents of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and foreigners temporarily staying in the territory of the People¡¯s Republic of China. Territory here refers to the territory of the customs.

.Two types of questionnaires were used for the 2010 population census. The short form contains items that reflect the basic situation of the population, while the long form include all short form items plus other items such as economic activities, marriage and family, fertility and housing, etc. According to the Procedures for the Selection of Samples for the Long Form, 10 percent of households selected by a random sampling programme completed the long form, and the rest of the households completed the short form.

.This publication consists of 3 parts. The first part, including 173 tabulations in 8 volumes£¬contains data from all households (i.e. common items in both long and short forms) that reflects the basic situation of the population. The second part, including 256 tabulations in 9 volumes, contains data from the long forms which present various detailed compositions of the population. Relevant regulations and technical documents concerning the census are provided as appendixes in the third part.

.Results in this publication are based on the processing of data directly from enumeration without any adjustment, excluding population not enumerated in the census (The post-enumeration survey indicates an undercount of 0.12% in the census enumeration), the 2.30 million servicemen and 4.65 million population with permanent residence difficult to define.

.The sampling ratio for the total population and for various compositions of the population may not be the same, as household is used as the ultimate sampling unit in the enumeration. Users should pay attention to methods when using information in this publication to estimate the total population from the sample results.

.The employment information in Volume IV of the long form presents data for population at age 16 and over, while employment data in other volumes are for population at age 15 and over.

.Regulation on the Classification of Urban/Rural Residence for Statistical Purpose prepared by the National Bureau of Statistics is used in urban/rural classification of the population in this census.

.Discrepancies on relative figures due to rounding are not adjusted in this publication.

.Empty cells in tables in this publication indicate that no data are available or the value is too small.
