This Communiqué contains the major statistics on the tertiary industry from the Second National Economic Census.

 

I. Transport, Storage and Post

 

1. Number of Units and Employees

 

By the end of 2008, there were altogether 148,000 corporation enterprises engaged in the transport, storage and post sectors, an increase of 75,000 as compared with that at the end of 2004. There were 10,202,000 people working in theses sectors, an increase of 2,595,000 as compared with that at the end of 2004 (see table 1). There were 7,000 corporations of government agencies and institutions engaged in transport, storage and post, a decrease of 1,000 as compared with that at the end of 2004, and there were 449,000 people employed, an increase of 41,000 as compared with that at the end of 2004.

 

Of the total number of corporation enterprises engaged in transport, storage and post service sectors, the proportion of transport[1] accounted for 85.3 percent, that of storage 11.7 percent and 3.0 percent for post service. In terms of employment structure, the proportion of people engaged in transport accounted for 87.3 percent, that of the storage 5.0 percent, and 7.7 percent for post service.

2. Total Assets, Business Revenue and Operating Profits

             

By the end of 2008, the total assets of the corporation enterprises engaged in transport, storage and post service sectors reached 7,480.74 billion yuan, up by 109.2 percent over the end of 2004; the share of transport, storage and post service of the total was 90.3 percent, 7.6 percent and 2.1 percent respectively.

 

In 2008, the total business revenue of the corporation enterprises engaged in transport, storage and post service sectors was 3,116.80 billion yuan, up by 153.8 percent over 2004; the share of transport, storage and post service was 87.3 percent, 9.7 percent and 3.0 percent respectively.

 

In 2008, the operating profits of the corporation enterprises engaged in transport, storage and post service sectors was 327.02 billion yuan, up by 258.1 percent over 2004, the share of transport, storage and post service was 93.3 percent, 7.3 percent and -0.6 percent respectively (see table 2).

II. Wholesale and Retail Trade

 

1. Number of Corporation Enterprises and Employees

 

By the end of 2008, there were altogether 1,403,000 corporation enterprises engaged in wholesale and retail trade with total employment of 18.912 million people, up by 58.8 percent and 36.4 percent respectively as compared with those at the end of 2004.

 

Of the total number of corporation enterprises in wholesale and retail trade, wholesale was 854,000, and retail trade was 549,000, the proportion of each accounted for 60.9 percent and 39.1 percent respectively.

 

Of the total number of employees, wholesale accounted for 55.8 percent and retail trade accounted for 44.2 percent (see table 3).

Of the total number of corporation enterprises in wholesale and retail trade, the number of state-owned corporations was 38,000, which accounted for 2.7 percent, that of the collective corporations was 51,000, which accounted for 3.6 percent, the number of private enterprises was 1,054,000, accounted for 75.1 percent, that of enterprises with funds from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan was 6,000, accounted for 0.4 percent and foreign funded enterprises 11,000, accounted for 0.8 percent (see table 4).

 

Of the total number of employees, the proportion of those in state-owned corporation enterprises accounted for 8.3 percent, that of collective corporations was 4.6 percent, the private enterprises 54.1 percent, enterprises with funds from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan accounted for 2.0 percent and 3.3 percent for foreign funded enterprises.

2. Total Assets

 

By the end of 2008, the total assets of the corporation enterprises engaged in wholesale and retail trade reached 12,161.94 billion yuan, an increase of 96.8 percent as compared with that at the end of 2004. Of this, asset of corporations in wholesales trade was 9,605.58 billion yuan, and asset of corporations in retail trade was 2556.36 billion yuan, up by 98.4 percent and 91.1 percent respectively over 2004 (see table 5).

3. Business Revenue from Principal Activities

 

In 2008, the total business revenue generated by principal activities of corporation enterprises engaged in wholesale and retail trades was 24,748.26 billion yuan, up by 123.1 percent against 2004. Of this total, wholesale was 20,412.92 billion yuan, and retail trades was 4,335.34 billion yuan, up by 121.3 percent and 132.1 percent respectively against 2004 (see table 6).

III. Hotel and Catering Services

 

1. Number of Corporation Enterprises and Employees

 

By the end of 2008, there were altogether 145,000 corporation enterprises engaged in hotel and catering services with a total employment of 5,852,000 people, up by 56.3 percent and 36.4 percent respectively as compared with those at the end of 2004.

 

Of the total number of corporations in hotel and catering services, the number of hotel was 54,000, that of catering was 91,000, accounted for 37.2 percent and 62.8 percent respectively. Of the total number of employees working in the corporations in hotel and catering services, the share of hotel was 45.6 percent and 54.4 percent for catering services (see table 7).

Of the total number of corporation enterprises in hotel and catering services, the number of state-owned corporation enterprises was 10,000, accounted for 6.9 percent, that of the collective enterprises was 7,000, accounted for 4.8 percent, the private enterprises 100,000, accounted for 69.0 percent, enterprises with funds from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan 2,000, accounted for 1.4 percent and 2,000 for foreign funded enterprises, accounted for 1.4 percent.

 

Of the total number of employees, the proportion of those in state-owned corporations accounted for 11.8 percent, that of collective corporations was 3.1 percent, the private enterprises 49.4 percent, enterprises with funds from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan accounted for 5.2 percent and 7.2 percent for foreign funded enterprises (see table 8).

3. Business revenue from Principal Activities

 

In 2008, the total business revenue generated by principal activities of corporation enterprises engaged in hotel and catering services was 614.69 billion yuan, up by 102.2 percent against 2004. Of this total, hotel was 268.55 billion yuan, and catering services was 346.14 billion yuan, up by 77.9 percent and 126.1 percent respectively against 2004 (see table 10).

IV. Real Estate

 

1. Number of Enterprises

 

By the end of 2008, there were 214,397 enterprises engaged in real estate sector in China, an increase of 85,354 as compared with that at the end of 2004. Of this total, the number of enterprises for real estate development was 87,881, that of property management was 58,406, real estate intermediate services 33,890, and 34,220 for other activities, up by 28,639, 26,724, 13,850, and 16,141 respectively as compared with those at the end of 2004 (see table 11).

2. Number of Employees

 

By the end of 2008, there were altogether 5,522,000 employees in China working in the enterprises engaged in real estate sector, an increase of 1,566,000 as compared with that at the end of 2004. The number of employees in real estate development was 2,077,000, that of property management was 2,501,000, real estate intermediate services 374,000, up by 492,000, 1,067,000, and 139,000 respectively over the end of 2004; there were 569,000 employees in other activities, down by 131,000 as compared with that at the end of 2004 (see table 12).

3. Business revenue from Principal Activities, called up Capital and Operating Profits

      

In 2008, the total business revenue generated by principal activities of enterprises engaged in real estate sector was 3058.65 billion yuan, an increase of 107.5 percent over 2004, of this, the business revenue of real estate development was 2669.42 billion yuan, that of property management was 207.67 billion yuan, real estate intermediate service 57.24 billion yuan, and 124.32 billion yuan for other activities, up by 100.5 percent, 204.5 percent, 171.2 percent, and 133.5 percent respectively over 2004 (see table 13). The total called up capital was 3305.24 billion yuan, and the operating profits was 386.13 billion yuan, an increase of 123.2 percent and 290.4 percent respectively over 2004.

 

In 2008, there were eight regions with business revenue from principal activities more than one hundred billion yuan, by sequence, they were: Jiangsu, Guangdong, Shanghai, Beijing, Zhejiang, Shandong, Liaoning, and Sichuan.

V. Other Sectors in Tertiary Industry

 

1. Number of Units and Employees

 

By the end of 2008, there were 2,975,000 legal units engaged in other sectors in the tertiary industry[2], an increase of 574,000 over the end of 2004. There were 72,729,000 employees, an increase of 14,201,000 over the end of 2004. Of this total, 857,000 were enterprises with total employment of 21.389 million people; 2,118,000 were government agencies and institutions and non-corporation enterprises with a total employment of 51.340 million people (see table 14).

2. Total Assets, Business Revenue and Operating Profits of Corporation Enterprises

 

In 2008, the total assets, business revenue and operating profits of other corporation enterprises engaged in other sectors of the tertiary industry were 113,698.38 billion yuan, 12,169.66 billion yuan and 1,865.39 billion yuan respectively. Of the total assets, the proportions of that from banking, information transmission, computer service and software, leasing and business services were 75.9 percent, 3.0 percent and 17.0 percent respectively or the three parts accounted for 95.9 percent of the total. Of the business revenue, the proportions of that from banking, information transmission, computer service and software, leasing and business services were 59.5 percent, 12.4 percent and 15.5 percent respectively or accounting for 87.4 percent of the three sectors of the total. Of the operating profits, the proportion of the above-mentioned three sectors were 48.8 percent, 18.4 percent and 21.6 percent respectively or accounting for 88.8 percent of the total (see table 15).

By the end of 2008, the total original price of fixed asset of government agencies, institutions and other non-corporation enterprises units was 8,427.98 billion yuan, the annual revenue was 5,744.51 billion yuan and the annual expenditure was 5,397.98 billion yuan (see table 16).
