Communiqué on National Energy Consumption for Unit GDP in the First Half of 2006

In the first half of 2006, the national energy consumption for unit GDP jumping 0.8 percent, year-on-year. In view of the energy consumption for unit value-added of industry, coal industry climbing 5.5 percent; petroleum and petrochemical industry up 8.7 percent; steel industry down 1.2 percent; non-ferrous metals industry surging 0.4 percent; building materials industry dropped 4.5 percent; that of chemical industry decreased 5.0 percent; textiles industry declined 5.5 percent; and electric power industry rising 0.8 percent in their energy consumption for unit of GDP.

The situation is not promising for regions and major industries to cut their energy consumption, and will be a very challenging task for them to attain this year's goal. Therefore, all regions and departments have adopt energy-saving target of accountability system in accordance with State Council’s requirements, vigorously promoting structural adjustment, focus efforts on energy-saving of key industries, ten energy-saving projects, and energy-saving management of enterprises; improve energy-saving measures such as protection mechanisms, and make great efforts to achieve the energy-saving target of the whole year.
